Speaking Of WZTI 1290 Greenfield, WI...

Spending Thanksgiving in the Straits Area of Northern, MI. I'm hearing WZTI 1290 and Fonz FM. First song I heard was "Sundown" by Gordon Lightfoot, and so at first I assumed it was a new format on CJBK 1290 London, ON. But I looked it up and found it was still News Talk. Serched Oldies 1290, and the most likely stations were WZTI and WIRL. Listened to both Streams, which corresponded with the tracks played on WZTI. Heard on a Eton/Grundig Satellite 750 with just the ferrite rod, turned mainly to minimize electrical interference. The stream is quite a bit behind the on air broadcast, like about a three minute track behind.

And yes, it's about 11:25 EST, so it's definitely Daytime skywave.

Checking stations in the same general area, WHBL 1330 Sheboygan and WISN 1130 Milwaukee are in. Not much of a signal from Green Bay Area stations. WTMJ 620 Groundwave, weak with a lot of electrical interference regardless of nulling out with the ferrite rod. No WOKY 920, and no WSSP 1250. I must say that compared to the much promoted Eton E1, the Satellit 750 is much better on AM BC, because the ferrite antenna is directional, the E1 is nondirectional.

I wondered why the perennial 23 kW Daytime skywave on 1510 wasn't there. It was licensed last month with 250 watts nondirectional! It's now WGKB. All I can say is what happens if something happens to all the Class D translators that can be bumped? 250 watts on FM is REALLY not a full market signal, except in a small to medium sized town.

Obviously you're getting nice daytime skywave mostly on the upper end of the band. Good location for you to do that.
Usually, by early December, you get Daytime skywave near Solar Noon, down to about 900 kHz. WJR 760 is just ground wave without fades, whereas WFDF 910 and WWJ 950 have ground wave and skywave of about the same field strength, giving complete fadeouts and reinforcements throughout the Solar Noon range of the Day. With both in the 500+ kW "ERP" range in my direction, the skywave can be inferred to be in the 50 uV/m range during the Solar Noon time of Day.

I normally hear WTMJ, WIND, and the Chicago 50kw blowtorches on the drive along the north shoreof Lake Michigan from Menominee to Escanaba. Regardless of season. WTMJ makes it all the way to Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario. (I discovered that listening to a noon start Packers game). WISN I don't remember offhand. My guess is that WHBL and WZTI would definitely be skywave.
