Alright, so I love doing these punch wars that Sean Ross created. I thought the Syracuse market was interesting...
You have 93Q who's the adult-leaning heritage CHR that the women adore, especially the morning show. Great air staff. Great programming.
You have Hot 1079 who's the rhythmic-leaning CHR that the kids love, and the women will listen to along with 93Q. Elvis Duran morning show, Ryan Seacrest, typical CC CHR. Able to avoid Premium Choice programming too!
Then you have Z89 which is student-ran and most people wouldn't even consider a real Syracuse station. The Beat of Syracuse. Rhythmic-leaning and loves playing new music and dance tracks. You won't hear much if any Nickelback or Daughtry.
I decided to do this punch war because I love innovative CHR's such as Z89 and would easily be my first choice if I lived in that market.
I tuned Z89 on right before the legal ID at 5pm and instantly decided it'd be cool to do a punch war for 3 stations instead of 2. I monitored 93Q and Hot 1079 using Yes.com and what song was playing going up against Z89, the underdog. What do you think?
5:00pm
Z89: Katy Perry - Firework
93Q: Pink - Raise Your Glass
Hot 1079: Nelly - Just A Dream
Firework is the #1 song in the country. Z89 wins.
Z89: Willow - Whip My Hair
93Q: Jason Mraz - I'm Yours
Hot 1079: Taio Cruz/Travie McCoy - Higher
Would have to say Hot wins this one. Taio Cruz is a huge artist right now, and the song is flying up the charts.
Z89: Auburn - All About Him
93Q: Neon Trees - Animal
Hot 1079: Trey Songz/Trey Songz - Bottoms Up
Great song by Auburn, but not getting any real attention. Neon Trees is falling off, but definitely a big hit. Bottoms Up is probably the song to go to at this point especially at night. Hot wins.
Z89: Far East Movement/Ryan Tedder - Rocketeer
93Q: Shakira/Wyclef Jean - Hips Don't Lie
Hot 1079: Chris Brown - Yeah 3x
Rocketeer has taken off! Great follow-up single to Like A G6. Z89 wins.
Z89: Fabolous - You Be Killin Em
93Q: Commercial Break
Hot 1079: Chris Brown - Yeah 3x
Hot wins. Big song by Chris. Cool song by Fabo, but no Mainstream CHR attention and 93Q is out because of the break.
Z89: David Guetta/Kid Cudi - Memories
93Q: Commercial Break
Hot 1079: Pink - Raise Your Glass
93Q still on commercial... we know who's making the most money in this battle! Raise Your Glass = massive... Hot wins.
Z89: Taio Cruz/Travie McCoy - Higher
93Q: Bruno Mars - Grenade
Hot 1079: Jay Sean/Lil Wayne - Down
93Q wins this one easily. Grenade is a song you will hear just about anywhere right now.
Z89: Flo Rida - Turn Around
93Q: Britney Spears - 3
Hot 1079: Black Eyed Peas - The Time (Dirty Bit)
This is the innovative side of Z89 here. Nice song by Flo Rida. Was a little bit bigger in the UK, but Who Dat Girl would be the next single for Flo Rida. Nice recurrent by 93Q. Hot is playing the hit here. The Time is top 10 and is definitely catchy.
Z89: Edward Maya/Vika Jigulina - Stereo Love
93Q: Flo Rida/David Guetta - Club Can't Handle Me
Hot 1079: Rihanna/Drake - What's My Name
All 3 are hits! Rihanna/Drake, another one you hear everywhere right now. Hot wins.
Z89: Drake - Find Your Love
93Q: Orianthi - According To You
Hot 1079: Far East Movement/The Cataracs/Dev - Like A G6
Like A G6 was a late smash in 2010 and still people are requesting it! Orianthi and Drake are good recurrents though... Hot wins.
Z89: PSA Break - Rihanna - Only Girl (In The World)
93Q: Edward Maya/Vika Jigulina - Stereo Love
Hot 1079: Commercial Break
Hot is out because of the break. Z89 took 60 seconds to play PSA's but was already playing Rihanna before 93Q and Hot switched. Not going to count the break because of that reason, plus Rihanna is the bigger hit with all ages.
Z89: Kanye West/Rick Ross/Jay-Z/Nicki Minaj - Monster
93Q: Pink - Perfect
Hot 1079: Enrique Iglesias/Ludacris - Tonight
Interesting here. You have Monster which is definitely unfamiliar for women, no CHR attention and only some rhythmic. Cool song though! Kudos to 93Q for playing new music, will catch on fast since it's Pink. Hot is playing the hit. Enrique and Luda is HUGE at the moment. The adult CHR's love it and the CHR's are in love with it. I'm predicting it to go #1. Hot wins.
Z89: Jesse McCartney - Shake
93Q: Justin Timberlake - Rock Your Body
Hot 1079: La Roux - Bulletproof
Jesse was hot for about 2-3 weeks, and that one went away. Great gold for 93Q. Bulletproof is more of a 12+ recurrent, the average 18-34 woman would probably choose Justin Timberlake in this case. 93Q wins.
Z89: Michael Jackson/Akon - Hold My Hand
93Q: Commercial Break
Hot 1079: David Guetta/Kid Cudi - Memories
93Q is out because of the break. MJ and Akon is hanging in the top 50 barely, but the song caught on pretty big in some markets. Guetta and Cudi are falling off, but would call it a hit. Gonna have to give it to Z89 here. The women definitely appreciate the MJ and Akon tune, especially going up against Memories. Sexy Chick however, probably would win in this case.
Z89: Trey Songz/Nicki Minaj - Bottoms Up
93Q: Ke$ha - Take It Off
Hot 1079: Lady Gaga - Lovegame
Nice recurrent by 93Q. Almost forgot about Take It Off, wasn't Ke$ha's biggest. Lovegame is a great recurrent for Gaga as well, also her weakest single. Z89 wins this one, Bottoms Up is a go to single right now, it's the chorus that does it!
Z89: Timbaland/Keri Hilson - The Way I Are
93Q: Nickelback - Gotta Be Somebody
Hot 1079: Commercial Break
Hot is out due to the break. So, which recurrent wins? Tough call. Nickelback was definitely a big hit, but not one that stands out for me. Rockstar or Photograph maybe... Z89 wins.
Z89: Ke$ha/3OH!3 - Blah Blah Blah
93Q: Usher/Young Jeezy - Love In This Club
Hot 1079: Commercial Break
Hot still on break. Tough call here as well. Was a weak Ke$ha single, but Usher and Jeezy certainly isn't one you hear everyday, most women probably forgot about it! Knowing 93Q, they probably took Jeezy out too!
Typically, since Ke$ha is a HUGE artist at the moment, she'd win, but Blah Blah Blah doesn't do it. 93Q wins.
So, the totals:
Z89: 6
93Q: 3
Hot: 8
Interesting! Kind of expected in this day of age though. Rhythmic is having its way on CHR. Being an Adult CHR today is smart, but is hard to win when you have the competition playing all the hits, but with a little more hotness to it. However, 93Q and Hot go back in forth in the books. Last book was Spring of '08 and 93Q was winning by .4 - in this market, the women love it, and would probably still choose 93Q, especially ones over 35 and the fact that there's no real Hot AC in the market. I do like 93Q because not only does their stream have excellent quality, the imaging and jingles are great, and the music fits their sound. They don't skew far off the rhythmic format, but still playing all the hits! Although, in the 6pm hour, I heard a Christmas song! Not sure if that was a mistake, or if they're running an old log. But based on the music and the currents they're playing, it sounds up-to-date to me. The "new music" promo however were some of the songs in the top 10, but that could just be how they promote it.
