Specialty Jazz Programs

Hello everyone. First, sorry to resurrect an old thread. It's been a while since I've been on any of the format boards on info. But while going back through the archives, this thread really caught my eye, and I wanted to post.

First, I think it's great there are still some AC stations out there doing jazz on Sundays. When I was growing up in the 80s and 90s, there were many AC stations in my area (upstate NY) that had jazz specialty shows. Some syndicated (The Jazz Show with David Sanborn), and others were very well produced local products. In fact, I owe a debt of gratitude to one such program. Jazz and More with Bill Groome, which aired in Corning, NY on different stations, until it was given the axe in the summer of 2005. This show exposed me to traditional and smooth jazz, new age, and fusion music that I never heard before. Upon hearing his show, I went on my own quest to seek out more of this music. I found more specialty shows, and even a station that played this music full time. Thus, my interest in jazz, new age, and other diverse music was born.

As radio became more and more corporate, such unique programs began to disappear. I was very sorry to hear about WRRM's decision to pull the plug on smooth jazz. At one point, it was a part of their nightly programming, if I recall correctly.

I was thrilled to see so many program hosts and programmers on this thread promoting their product. I'll be sure to check out all the streams, as I'm always on the lookout for unique programming.

Finally, as it seems to be okay to do a little self promotion, I would like to tell you all about my own attempt at an eclectic NAC radio program. I've made reference to the fact I produce radio shows for non-commercial broadcasters on other boards. Now, though, I'd like to get feedback from people on this board who know and love this music. One of my offerings is called "Lake Air." The name comes from a station I was really fond of while searching for more jazz music on the radio. WLKA in Canandaigua, NY (Rochester market) used the Lake Air moniker, as a nod to their location, in the Finger Lakes region of NY. My program, carrying on in the same vein as the original Lake Air, and the Breeze network I discovered thanks to this board, is similar in sound. If you like programs like The Harmonic Lounge or Quiet Music (both of which I enjoy very much, by the way), you may like the sound of Lake Air.

The show originates in my home studio here in Geneva, NY. Locally, it's heard on WHWS, a low power college station. (www.whws.fm) on Friday mornings at 10 a.m. Eastern. I also decided to make it available to other small non commercial stations and webcasters. You can learn more about the show, and download the current edition of the program, here:

Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts. The show has been around for a while now, but I wanted to wait until I felt I had things "just right" before I went ahead and promoted it on this board.
