Spectacular E Skip opening in Tampa from the northeast!

My new pioneer car radiowith rds is great for dx id's. Here in central Maryland I got -

Wave 92.7
Gater 98.7 palm beach
Big 105.9 Miami
Dj 106.7 Miami
94.5 the Arrow sw Florida
mega 94.9 Miami
99.7 Jack fm - the strongest

All around 11.30am this morning

I got a little bit of E skip in northern VA as well. WCMQ 92.3 in Miami, a country 92.7, hearing the words "treasure island", probably the Wave 92.7, also 94.5 the Arrow playing Quiet Riot's early 80s hit "*** On Feel the Noise," and Mega 94.9.

I've been waiting for this day for years! :)

The FM band here in Tampa was flooded with stations from New Jersey, Philadelphia, New York, and parts of New England.

Here are three videos I got...

WPST Trenton, New Jersey.

WIOQ Philadelphia

WDRC Hartford

It doesn't get any better than this!

Was getting Talk formatted WDBO-FM/96.5 from Orlando quite well in Stereo here in Easton, MA. Last time I heard 96.5 in Orlando was back in 2009 when I was on vacation down in Florida. Back then it was Classic Rock WHTQ. Usually, 96.5/Orlando is one of the first E-skip stations to make it here in Massachusetts.

Interesting to hear all the reports from the other direction!

I stations I was able to identify with station IDs were Z-100 New York, WPST and WSTW Trenton NJ, Q-102 Philadelphia, and WMGK Philadelphia which was then completely taken over by WDRC Hartford, Connecticut.

Many normally empty FM frequencies were jammed with multiple stations battling it out, making it hard to ID any single one. This was great!

As Paul Harvey used to say,,here's a strange...here in Naples I noticed the band to be completely closed around 7:30 am this morning. All the normally weak signals were gone and only the power houses in Southwest Florida were receivable here. This was very unusual as I usually DX on my way to work each morning at that time and get alot of translators in our area plus low power noncoms. The band must have opened up a few hours later. Next time it goes down I will listen a few hours lter and see what happens.

Here in Princeton,Nj the locals are all wiped out except WPST. I've ID'd St Louis, Hannibal Mo, Lots of Arkansas and Jacksonville Florida here.

Honest-to-goodness .....

JUST turned on one of those Grundig G-8 radios bought from Radio shack an hour ago, from a mall in Northeast Pennsylvania. It was 6PM EDST.

I guess I got one of the 'good' G-8's. The AM stations align and callibrate.

And so do the FM's! I had merely turned the dashed thing onto the FM and something called 'C-106', Country, was coming in here. They gave the time as 5:13. It was 6:13 here.

Thank you, rtc, for the Grundig radio sale tip!

C-106 is KWKZ Cape Giradeau, MO. I think that's your first Es catch Steve! Congrats! When I logged Phoenix stations tonight [see main thread], I was ALSO using a Grundig G8. KPKX 98.7 was heard over KLCK IBOC, and KYOT 95.5 was heard over KJR IBOC. Got very intense, up to 107.9!

Thanks for the tip, Gar.

Yup ; first Es from that direction, anyway. Not a bad introduction to the new little radio. You're right about the commotion ; it was hard to keep any station tuned in, there were so many. Though not really IDing, a station with many St. Louis mentions was coming in 0n 105.7. I gather that was KPNT. The Radio-Locator has two different tower sites and patterns.

Later on, things seemed to've been more tropo. WPGC 95.5 and the news WNEW on 99.1 from Washington were there. Does Es do that? I mean, does it downgrade to tropo?

Several years ago here I put up a TV antenna to clear the kitchen roof. FIRST THING I tuned to, and the best picture of the bunch, was Channel 2 from Fort Lauderdale. Pooch here was impressed. 'That's a pretty good antenna.' I told her that it wasn't normal reception.
And one midday, with the GE Superadio II, I tried for some lunch-jazz from the Pottsville translator of WRTI Philadelphia. It's about 12 miles away. Sure enough, there was jazz, and the gal announcer. And taking requests, too. Except she kept saying, 'Jazz 99'.
I'm thinking, 'She can't say that. The parent WRTI is 90.1.'
Then I found out why she was allowed to say 'Jazz 99' -- when she gave the phone numbers for callers in Dade and Broward counties.

That's funny. Yeah, if one does not know about unusual atmospheric conditions causing distant reception, they would think they had a real super antenna. LOL

No, there's no connection between E Skip and tropo, as they are caused by two completely different things.

The tropo conditions were probably also there all along but the E Skip overpowered it.

Back in 1989, here in Tampa I remember getting tropo from Houston and only a couple days later I heard one of the same stations from Houston again only it was from E Skip.

The way to tell it was E Skip was because of the rapid fading in and out, whereas the tropo I got earlier had a steady signal.
