So, consider: in baseball, there is a very definite financial advantage that comes from a championship. Your fans are more engaged, you can sell more tickets and charge more for each one, and the revenue that comes from that in turn allows you to hire better players who'll give you a better chance of staying on top.
The Yankees are one of the most valuable sports properties in the entire world. The Rays probably don't even crack the top 100.
I would submit that the linkage between being "number one" in radio ratings doesn't have quite so automatic a financial gain associated with it these days. WFAN isn't at the top of the ratings, but it brings in more revenue than some of the stations with twice its ratings.
Are Lew Dickey and the Atsingers (Salem) and the Buckley heirs (WOR) in it for ratings...or for revenue and profit? I think I know my answer to that question.
