spero dedes future

sad news for radio play-by-play fans today as spero dedes looks to be the obvious replacement for joel meyers on lakers television next year.

dedes is the best radio b-ball pbp guy right now - nationally or locally. nj nets, pdx, calabro are close but dedes is a gem. his strongest trait is not being an overt homer. it should be an easy shift for him to do lakers tv as his ncaa and nfl network work is solid.

obviously, he'll be missed on the radio. maybe the lakers will go back to a simulcast (ala the chick hearn days)?

Spero's on NFL Network? I remember he did some work for CBS' NFL coverage. I think he also called some NCAA basketball tournament games. He's really good and he does have a bright future ahead of him.

No return to simulcast, not in this day and age. Two different audiences cannot be treated to the same verbiage.

...plus, the NBA has mandated that teams go with separate radio and television teams. The Lakers, along with the Phoenix Suns, the old Seattle Supersonics, Toronto Raptors, and Utah Jazz are the last teams that did away with the simulcasts.

I'm not a fan of Dedes (I think he's dry and boring), but I do think he's a pretty capable play-by-play guy. I'm sure with the Lakers' blessings, he can continue to do his outside work (CBS and NFL Network), but they would still need to find a back-up PxP when he's not available. I think, at least during next season (the Lakers' last season on both Fox Sports West and KCAL-TV), they'll use Bill MacDonald on cable, and either Gary Miller or John Ireland on over-the-air. I do like the choice of Kevin Calabro as a potential radio replacement, although I'm holding out hope he could be the heir apparent to Ralph Lawler of the Clippers whenever Lawler decides to call it quits.
