Spicy language on WRAS

One day last week, I believe it was Thursday just after noon, I was listening to WRAS and an interview with a
comedian by the last name of Patton - I believe he might be a regular on King of Queens - don't know, never
watch the program.

The conversation turned to Bill Clinton and several statements were made by this guy that mentioned "Great
B**w-Job" ..... well the interviewers said" "can he say that"? to which the comedian said" "Let me restate
that.....Clinton got his c**k sucked....again, the interviewers were agasp (not really-poor acting)...then Patton
said: "he got some great f***ing head"....then there was dead air for 30-60 seconds, afterwhich there was
nothing but one station promo after another....I heard atleast a half dozen of them. I don't know if these
fruit cakes ever came back on the air nor did I care - I was out of there.

Question - is it just me or is this kind of going over the line or was this just a typical day for WRAS? I couldn't
tell you, this was the first time (and the last) I've ever listened to this station.

As of this past weekend, live guests are not allowed on the air at WRAS. This action was taken in direct respose to the interview you mentioned. Any interview, or performance, will be taped to insure compliance with FCC rules and regulations along with Georgia State University R&R.....AND WRAS rules and regs.
WRAS is a student run, student programmed radio station. However, it is closely advised by a media advisor, who is a full time employee of Georgia State. Legal matters are monitored by a 25 year+ professional broadcaster who is a fulltime employee of Georgia State. Georgia State University goes through extreme pains to insure the legal operation of WRAS.
Student broadcasters, just like the "pros," make mistakes. The Regular Guys are a prime example....here are grown ups making the same error in judgement. The students involved have been suspended. This behavior will not be tolerated by the student staff or the professional advisory.
All guests on WRAS are required to read and sign a statement which explains applicable FCC rules and regulations. They also must acknowledge their responsibility to follow these rules.
Leave it to a potty mouth comedian to say to hell with the rules....hope that puke never gets another second of air!

Patton Oswalt is the comedian/actor on King of Queens. If that is who it was.

Interviews like this are the reason you always have the delay on. It's a good reminder for us all.

Patton Oswalt is hysterical. How about they put someone on the dump button to handle these situations? Of course comics sometimes bend the rules on radio, but if you're a radio host and you don't expect that, you're just ignorant. Comedians do radio constantly to promote their gigs. It's a shame that most hosts treat them like crap.

If I understand correctly, 88 does not have a dump button. They are 100% live. I'm sure the DJs told the comedian to behave, but sometimes your mouth can't stop when on a roll.

If this comedian wanted to say things like that, he should have done it on the of the satellite channels like XM or Sirrius that airs O&A or Howard Stern and not a college-run station like WRAS.

Fruit cakes?? Wooo hoo, don't get your panties in a wad over a few dirty words....

Then how will they promote local gigs? This is common for many comedians.

Having heard comics on AM/FM radio before, sometimes they're not as familiar with the new rules of the FCC. Or, since many of them do radio, they'll just blurt out a line, knowing the audience won't hear it, but know it's a good one and hope at least the jocks and staff laugh at it. Comics just go into a radio studio expecting a guy on the button.

As long as no one complains, WRAS will be alright.

The learned poster, livingfruitvirus, is correct. It seems to me, however that WRAS, had something similar happen a few years ago on their comedy show. Apparently, one of the jocks played a cut that was so dirty, some truck drivers even blushed. Andy, a.k.a. Digital Devil, if you are still lurking about, can you confirm?

Man, I never bothered to transer over my old digitaldevil account with the R-I upgrades and at this point I can't remember the email address I used to set it up. Anyway...

It was about two years ago on the old Oddly Enough program (Odd Todd had graduated by this time) that one of our DJs played a *badly* edited David Cross skit involving God, the Pope, and having sex with small children. We had a complaint filed, but it has since passed and we are all very very grateful the hammer of the FCC never came down on us. Thanks to this DJ I got a timeslot for my show. w00t

I know the two DJs involved in this current situation and I know they both deeply regret what transpired. They both love 88 and would never do anything to actually harm the station or its reputation. We don't have a delay system, we do have procedures in place, as Tom said, to cover ourselves with the FCC, but we cannot put duct tape over an interviewee's mouth and have an effective interview. These two people are not ignorant of our regulations and having worked with them for some time I know they're very competent at their jobs. This comedian was just a complete moron and disregarded our warnings. I don't think it's fair for people in this thread to call them names or try to defame them when you don't know what you're talking about.

The fact that this thread started with amitherightcaller saying, "this was the first time (and the last) I've ever listened to this station" is a load of crap. I guarantee you they've listened before and will listen again. You can't honestly tell me they just happened to magically tune in for that interview.

Andyfrom88 I assure you that I had never listened to this station in the past. On this particular day I wasn't
hearing much on the dial - am or fm. I had been scanning the am side, using my seek button, then as I switched over to the fm band I just happened to start out at 88.5 when this interview caught my attention.
Nothing against RAS, I'm sure there are a lot of fine folks who keep this operation on the air but for someone
in my demo, their format is just not appealing. Not a bad station, just one that doesn't offer me anything
to tune in again - but then I can say that for about three-fourths of Atlanta radio too.

Hi Andy... long time listener of Album88 (since the early 80's). I hope the suspension is very short for the DJs. Hardly seems to be their fault unless maybe they didn't cut him off soon enough. Still one of Atlanta's bright radio spots.

does the comedian Patton stand a chance of having to pay a fine to the FCC or is it just the radio station at risk?

I'm still unclear on how all of that works (remember Bono getting fined for the statements he made at the Golden Globes?)

Can the FCC come after individuals or just licensed broadcast facilities?
