Spiff Carner (finally) joins True Oldies 106.7

Here's the press release:

ATLANTA’S TRUE OLDIES CHANNEL 106.7FM
COMPLETES ON-AIR STAFF

ATLANTA, GA (August 4, 2008) – TRUE OLDIES 106.7FM announces its complete on-air lineup beginning Monday, August 11th. The weekday lineup includes the Imus in the Morning Show mornings from 6a-9a, Scott Shannon from 9a-3p, and Freddie Brooks featuring Spiff Carner afternoons from 3p-8p.

Atlanta’s TRUE OLDIES 106.7FM is playing a broad list of rock-and-roll hits from the 60’s and 70’s presented by one of the most experienced group of personalities to ever hit the air in Atlanta. It all starts with national talk show host, Don Imus, who presents one of the most listened-to news programs through a network of stations coast-to-coast. The midday program host is Radio Hall-of-Famer, Scott Shannon, who has made a career of playing the best rock-and-roll hits of all time. Scott serves as the music director of True Oldies, showcasing a wide variety of the biggest hits from the 60’s and 70’s. Afternoon personality, Freddie Brooks, member of the Nebraska Radio Hall of Fame, and bass guitar player in a local band, is joined by long-time Atlanta personality Spiff Carner. Spiff was with Atlanta’s original Oldies station, FOX 97, for more than fifteen years.

“You cannot imagine how excited I am to be joining the team at TRUE OLDIES 106.7,” stated Spiff Carner. “I’ve been listening to the station since they signed on, and I am amazed at the incredible number of songs they have in the library. This is what an Oldies station should sound like! After nine months of sleeping late, I’m well rested and looking forward to meeting the listeners, playing tons of the greatest music ever produced, and once again having FUN on the radio.”

Freddie Brooks, afternoons on TRUE OLDIES 106.7 says, “I am absolutely thrilled to be on the air at TRUE OLDIES playing the great music I grew up with! Now to have Spiff joining me for a few hours each day, it’s going to be that much more fun!”

“We are delighted to have Spiff join Freddie Brooks in the afternoon. While many listeners are new to TRUE OLDIES 106.7, many more will appreciate how important Freddie and Spiff are to this great format. We’ll all enjoy a rock-and-roll education with a little fun each weekend afternoon on our drive home,” said Operations Manager, Mark Richards.

Good for Spiff! I wish him well!

I second that. Spiff is a part of Atlanta radio that needs to be there.

At the end of last year, I exchanged emails with a former Atlanta radio personality. He said Atlanta radio is just not the same without Steve & Vikki and Randy & Spiff. Well, now we have Steve & Vikki back, and we have Freddy & Spiff. And oh yes, we have Randy too.

I guess that my posts were correct....... I kept saying that True Oldies 106.7 WYAY should have really given old Spiffo a shot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Who is Freddie Brooks? Nebraska? I would have liked to see Randy and Spiff in afternoons, personally.

Rodney, the PR is a little confusing. Is it going to be "Freedie and Spiff" of "Freedie - with Spiff as a Frequent Guest"?

I have too heard from a very good source that Randy Cook will join Spiff Carner afternoons on WYAY-True Oldies 106.7 on Oct.1 when his Cheap Channel contract at WGST runs out! Freddie Brooks will move to the 10 AM- 3 PM slot at that time. And yes, until Oct.1, Spiff will co-host the afternoon drive with Freddie Brooks.

Does Randy not have a noncompete in his K? I'm not an expert, but isn't 6 months pretty standard?

Of course, he could come down with a blood clot next week....and his noncompete could say nothing about TV spots....

It is a done deal for Oct.1St!!!!!!! Randy will disappear of of WGST VERY soon and will be reunited with Spiff on True Oldies 106.7 on Oct. 1st!! B.B. Murray and Bob Bailey may be on their way to True Oldies 106.7 as well!!!

If that was to happen, hopefully True Oldies will have a longer tenure than their demised predecessors at Fox 97, Cool 105.7, and 94.9 Lite FM.

It's not R & S's fault, but the last time Randy and Spiff were programming together, one of my most listened stations back in December 2006 was booted off the air, and I had to listen to a <150 song playlist at another uninteresting radio station at work thereafter. That station wasn't even The River.

Are you serious? Randy and Spiff could get back together? I won't be able to sleep at night.

I'm new to Atlanta, so I never heard of those guys.

Are they supposed to be some really great team? If they're on the oldies station, that means that to listen to them do their schtick, I'd have to also listen to oldies, right?

Are they so overpoweringly good, so incredibly entertaining, that they would make it worth sitting through a song by Tony Orlando and Dawn in order to hear them talk? I've never heard of any entertainers in any medium who were that good.

Mark Richards also had a contract, but when the opportunity came about for him in Atlanta, Cox had no problem allowing him to take it and not disrupt his life any more than the format change to Urban caused him. Some of the better companies do not come up with bogus illnesses as to why people are leaving and seem to be rather civil about things like this.

Randy and Spiff first teamed together in the midwest in the early 1980`s. They became close friends. By 1985, they were in North Carolina at a 100,000 watt top 40 station. In Feb. 1989, they were hired as the Morning Team at the 100,000 watt Atlanta Oldies Powerhouse Fox 97-WFOX-FM. For years, they were very highly rated. Fox 97 was sold to Cox Radio in 2000, and they ruined the format with a small 98 song playlist. Cox killed Fox 97 with their stupidity. Randy and Spiff left when Fox 97 was blown up in Feb. 2003. In March 2003, they were hired by Cheap Channel for the new Oldies Atlanta station-Cool 105.7-A Fox 97 clone with a small playlist. This station was blown up in ;late 2005, because of a small playlist. Randy and Spiff went to 100,000 CC station Lite 94.9. It too was soon blown up with a small playlist. In 2006, Randy and Spiff were put on CC`s WGST- a AM talk station with a bad signal. Spiff was fired by CC in Oct. 2007. Randy remains for now, but will reunite with Spiff on WYAY-FM True Oldies 106.7 on Oct. 1 in the afternoons. True Oldies 106.7 is a MUCH better Oldies station than the others.

Since you know so much how come Randy doesn't have to sit out for 6 months? If he is not on the ai October 1st will you stop posting?

Also if Randy & Spiff are the almighty team in Atlanta Radio :'( how come they weren't strong enough to carry their respective stations. Three stations in a row did format flips with them anchoring mornings. The Regular Guys are able to carry a station. See Rock 100.5 currently and 96 Rock in the past which pretty much rested on the success of their morning show. If Rock 100.5 came on the air with out a morning show for 6 months they wouldn't crack 1.0 in 12 plus. Q would be nowhere without Bert. So how come Randy & Spiff if they are saviors of Atlanta radio can;t do that.

Actually they did. When Cox bought Fox 97 (so they could turn it into a white Hip-Hop station) R&S held off the flip with the "Save our Oldies" campaign, until Cox finally forced the change anyway. Ask the folks that now work at 97.1 The River how that worked out.
