Spiff Happens-True Oldies 106.7

Ok, I'm going to chime in here. I love Spiff's dry humor and even though I agree with Bizlistener that I consider about every 3rd song a dud on 106.7, I listen for Spiff. So if I got a PPM, 106.7 would have numbers they didn't have at least in the afternoon. If Spiff weren't on, I'd never tune there on my drive home. So now my afternoon listening habits have changed somewhat. The PPM people would love me because I make use of the cool new things on radios called "buttons". Medved has a boring topic, flip to 106.7 - Spiff not on and it's a dud song, flip to River - Kate McCarthy mud wrestling Jordan Gray, flip to Fish and so on...

Finally, on Friday afternoon when I hit button #7 on the car radio, I heard Spiff.

So, was this guy famous for being really, really good or was he just famous for being on the air a long time? And, does this new station permit him to be funny, or is his talent for being entertaining deliberately held in check by the format on True Oldies?

For those that don't believe, no explanation will suffice.

For those that believe, no explanation is necessary.

(Yes, I'm going to hell for that. ;D )

I don't know Spiff... but wasn't he pretty much always part of a team show or was he a solo jock?

I don't understand the Spiff worship by certain posters on this board. He and Randy partnered for mornings on Fox for years. OK show. Very vanilla. Low numbers. The station was blown up. End of story. Same thing at Cool. If he and Randy were such strong personalities wouldn't they have continued to be successful - whether here in Atlanta or elsewhere?

Enough Times/Oldies with this propaganda. You are making me nauseous. The promotions director should hire you to wash the vans or something. Hell, you'd probably do it for a free True Oldies tee.

Here's to the True Oldies Channel. Scott Shannon is one of the smartest in the business but stop your nonsense.

I'm going to come to their defense. Their numbers on Fox 97 were very good when Fox as a station did well. Fox's audience, as was the case with all oldies stations, started skewing too old for the bulk of agency ad dollars. Combined with the older skew, the station's overall numbers were going down. We could discuss the reasons for that, but Randy & Spiff were not the reason.

At the time Cool 105.7 was killed, CC was axing oldies stations in a number of market. CC management rightly felt that Viva, which was at 105.3, needed to cover Gwinnett, which the 105.7 signal does well. And CC decided to replace Viva on 105.3 with a younger-skewing station, which I don't think ever got the billings that Cool was getting.

Finally, contrary to what you said, Randy & Spiff did continue to be successful right here in Atlanta. When CC blew up Cool, they moved Randy & Spiff to the bigger 94.9 Lite FM signal. But once again, Randy & Spiff fell victim to a format change. But they've continued to get hired since then.

I agree with Roddy!!!! Randy and Spiff have been a huge hit in atlanta for many years! I do really believe that they will be together again on air doing Oldies on a 100,000 watt station, when that will be, I will leave to be said whenever it does happen...... Randy is still dealing with clear channel.....
