Spike Eskin Strikes Out Again ...

I just had the misfortune of hearing YSP's Spike Eskin talk about how fat Brewers' first-baseman Prince Fielder is. Just awful, but nothing new for Burger King Jr., who has said all of the following about the city's own sports figures ...

1. "Pat Burrell is terrible. I don't know why the fans like him now." Pat Burrell was an integral part of the Phils' World Series season and final victory over the Rays to win the Series.

2. "Donovan McNabb is my favorite player." That loser was just traded to an inter-division rival, because that's just how little impact we think he'll have.

3. "Jamie Moyer is Old." Eskin Jr. actually started a website to that effect, and Mr. Moyer just became the oldest pitcher in history to throw a complete-game shutout.

Three strikes and you're out, lil' eskin!

Well i really hate havning to defend a Eskin, but...

Pat Burrell was just DFA by a small budget team that is paying him alot of money, and really had to swallow alot to make such a move.

McNabb is alot of people's favorite player, and if he was still in the prime of his career, he wouldn't be in Washington

and Jamie Moyer is old. 47 is old in baseball. All the complete game shutouts in the world won't change that.

Given Spike's track record, as laid out in the original post, I wouldn't speak good things about WYSP if I were him...

I think you need some more context, Irishfl, about lil' Eskin's comments:

1. He was hating on Burrell DURING the 2008 championship run, when Burrell had more than redeemed himself for a horrible start after we signed him. It was about redemption, and Eskin just couldn't comprehend the city's ability to forgive a guy who perservered.

2. He was loving on Donovan while the rest of the city was barely supporting him due to epic failure after epic failure despite his high level of talent.

3. Yes, Moyer is "old" for a baseball player, but why would you hate on a starting pitcher while working for a hometown radio station? If Moyer can pitch, who cares how old he is? If anything, Moyer's age makes the story more compelling. It's like making fun of someone for having big feet when they kick a 60-yard field goals week after week. It's childish and ignorant -- plain and simple, and certainly doesn't fly in a town with arguably the most knowledgeable and passionate sports fans on the planet.

Incidentally, it was six years ago today that a man named Randy Johnson pitched a perfect game for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was 40 on that day. Not bad for an old guy, huh?

"and certainly doesn't fly in a town with arguably the most knowledgeable and passionate sports fans on the planet."

"Very very arguably"

Agree with statement number two, Philly is totally overrated as having the most knowledgeable and passionate sports fans on the planet. Many are knowledgeable, but many are not. Fans in most major sports markets are as passionate if not more so, ex. Boston, New York, Chicago, Detroit, just to name four cities with equal or more passion than Philly. Now if we want to add the most obnoxious and feeling as though they have to live up to a certain "bad boy" reputation and as being boorish, with "what have you done for me lately types", then we can talk about Philly sports fans accurately.
But "arguably the most knowledgeable and passionate sports fans on the planet" is TOTALLY hype and not so arguably bogus.

So, it's bad to hate on a pitcher for the home team (though pointing out the obvious, that he is at the upper end of the age scale for a baseball player hardly seems to be "hating") but it's ok for "the rest of the city" (which we can suspect may be you and a percentage of the callers to WIP/WPEN; hardly a scientific nor necessarily representative sample) to be hating on a city's starting quarterback. And let's not forget, Moyer (and I'm a big fan saying this) has been fortunate to be the recipient of good offense when in many games he has that "awful" inning. But that's neither here nor there--it either is or isn't OK to express opinions, pro or con, about hometown athletes. His may not be the same as yours, which seems to be the issue at hand.

You all make excellent points, which has made me realize my biggest error -- listening to YSP, and furthermore listening to anything any of their jocks has to say. I hereby promise to never listen to YSP again ... until they go all sports this fall! Go Flyers, Phils, Eagles, and, ok, even the Sixers!

Now you're talking sammijar. Simply no reason to listen to this terrestrial radio station, despite what the CBS Radio management types in Philly would want you to believe. Play your own music on your own devices when and where you want to listen at YOUR schedule, NOT THEIRS. And, if you care to listen to the Eagles there are other sources for game broadcasts besides this station. It's time to stay away from pre-programmed music and inept jocks with little credibility sprouting opinions that are just like any other opinion, and you're smart enough to have your own thoughts to share with people you care about. You certainly don't need to rationalize what someone on a FM radio station says.
