Spike Gets Q101 APD GIG HTTP://WWW.ALLACCESS.COM Brett "Spike" Eskin EMMIS Alternative WKQX (Q101)/CHICAGO hires CBS RADIO Talk WYSP (94.1 FREE FM)/PHLADELPHIA MD BRETT "SPIKE" ESKIN as APD, effective MAY 25th. SPIKE, who has been MD at WYSP for the past 3 years, replaces JACENT JACKSON who exited three months ago. SPIKE has been handling the YSP Rock Stream and the non-Talk weekend dayparts, including hosting a SUNDAY night new music show called "EXPOSED" since the station switched from Rock to Talk. EMMIS/CHICAGO VPO/Programming MIKE STERN said, "In the end, beyond the wealth of knowledge and experience SPIKE brings to this position, I chose him because he also brings WYSP’s long heritage of thinking big, acting big, and working with big talent." "I'm honored, excited, and very happy to be joining MIKE and the team over at Q101," said ESKIN. "This is a huge career step for me, and I'm looking forward to giving it all I've got to make Q101 the very best it can be. I've spent 9 years at WYSP, and grown up here, as excited as I am to take on my new challenge, I'll be very sad to say goodbye to everyone in PHILLY."

He will not be the only person from Philly their. Electra from Y-100 also works at Q101.

And, "Spike" Eskin is related to Howard Eskin how...? ???
His son.
I see. And, he landed the job of Music Director at a Top 5 or Top 6 market station nine years ago at age 20 how? Apparently, Daddy pulled more than a few strings. Wonder how many experienced Music Directors didn't get the gig because Howard's kid got the shot. It must be nice. ;)

Poor Spike. If he'd done better at picking his parents, he could be president of Comcast. It's bad enough when somebody gets their kid a job. Even worse when somebody hires a - shall we say - protege. ::) Bottom of the barrel is when somebody pulls strings to get their spouse a job.

Holy crap. You call out someone about "petty jealousy" in another thread, but you're just as guilty of it here. First, you didn't read the blurb. Spike was as WYSP for nine years, but he was MD for the last three. So it's not like he had things handed to him on a silver platter.I believe - and correct me if I'm wrong - that Spike started at WYSP either doing overnights and/or weekends.Even with Eskin pulling strings, Spike WAS and IS a strong enough personality to pull it off. So don't pull the "how many talented people were denied a shot"...Don't kill the son for the sins of the father.

"Petty jealousy" isn't pointing out the obvious: that Daddy got him in the front of the line. If he "grew" into the job in six years...when he was 26...good for him. A monkey with a dart-board could hit a bullseye in six year's time!I repeat: getting ANY on-air gig at age 20 in the 5th or 6th market borders on the incredibly fortunate. Had his last name been Smith, Figglemeyer or Mohammed...you and I wouldn't be having this conversation..and you know it. ;)

If you were fresh out of high school or college and someone you know (family, relative, friend) is able to get you a decent job, I'd consider that very good fortune. Hell, I wish my family had more strings to pull. I was lucky enough to have a friend who got me in the door with virtually no experience and I thank him every chance I get.I guess that somehow doesn't apply if you're the son of a edgy sports talk host? Hilarious.

You miss the point: "paying one's dues" is part and parcel of the total radio experience. Nearly every man or woman who is in the industry today started at a small to medium station in a small to medium market. That's called "paying one's dues." You said yourself that you were "lucky" to have someone get you in the door "with virtually no experience." That's barely better than Spike's entrance. Those who started in the 5th or 6th market at age 20 because Daddy got them the gig did NOT pay their dues. And, they have a certain inflated sense of "entitlement" that others who busted their butts to climb the ladder do not have. Period.Everything in my life I've achieved in broadcasting has been from taking my basic and raw talent(s), learning the ropes, working hard and by EARNING promotions, ratings and advancements. Most broadcasters get there by the same route. A few use family connections and friends, among other things, to "achieve."And, that's the part about which you and I disagree. No more; no less.

you guys need to stop blasting Spike, daddy might have pull some strings but Spike is a really good guy. I've talked to him online and he is really into what he does.

Ah.... I get it. So instead of taking the best job I could get my hands on, I should have toiled around making beans just so I could "pay my dues." How silly of me.Due to circumstance, I found a high-paying position with a startup company who was willing to overlook my immediate inexperience in favor of the future return. I worked my ass off to bring myself up to speed and produce like someone with 4-5 more years experience would, and now I'm getting compensated as such. That's the other way to "pay your dues." Spike may very well have done the same. I don't see how anything but jealousy can find fault in that approach.

It's not jealousy toward you, or Spike, that I feel...it's pity. You both missed out on the bonding that only comes with a shared experience with like jocks who can say to each other things like "remember when the phone company cut off the service because the owner hadn't paid the bill" or "remember that jock who went to the restroom and while he was in there...the CD player stuck?" Your "bonding" can only come with jocks who can share things like "Daddy got me this job" or "I started with a high-paying position even though I had no experience." I imagine by the time you were 23, you had a 51% share in the company or a 40-share rating, huh. ;)Look, you and I aren't going to agree on this one, so, how about just agreeing to disagree? Have a good one.
