Spike O'Dell house fire

Spike goes out of town, and his house burns down. How awful.

Fire guts radio personality's house

A fire this morning destroyed the west suburban home of WGN-AM 720 radio personality Spike O'Dell, authorities reported.

The fire broke out around 3 a.m. at O'Dell's home in Aurora, according to Fire Marshal Jack Smith.

Flames had engulfed the residence by the time firefighters arrived, Smith said. No one was home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

Let's all say a prayer for Spike and his family.
That's absolutely horrible.

Any word on his dog? I hope the lil' guy's okay.

The fire comissioner said that they think that the dog was in the house and is gone. I find it hard to believe they would leave the dog in the house for days. I would assume it is at a kennel or at a family members. We'll see.

NBC 5 reported that he unfortunately didn't make it.

Aurora Fire Chief Jack Smith said no one was inside the home at the time of the fire, but O'Dell's dog, Otis, who he spoke about on his radio show often, did not survive.

There are services out there that will come to your house and let the dog out, take it for a walk, feed it and give it water for as long as you are gone, that way they are at home and are more comfortable than a kennel. My dad has 2 Akita's and he has this done for his dogs, and I know someone who does it for a living...yes a living! They make great money at it.

I'm sorry, but my neighbors don't watch my dog when I'm gone. We also use a pet service that comes to your home a couple times a day to feed, walk, play with your dog, cat, rabbits, or what have you. Why is that so hard to believe "dad"? Step outside your box.

From the news story, there was a caretaker. He or she probably took care of the dog, maybe even used the gas grill?

One story I read said that he had a house-sitter, but was working at night at a club when the fire broke out, so I believe the dog was at the house.
Edited by am_listener on 06/24/05 07:51 PM.

The question I have, is why is he in Aurora? I am sure he makes a lot of money - does that mean he has a modest home?

The house was on the eastern edge of Aurora (essentially Naperville) in the Stonebridge subdivision, which I have driven through many times. Stonebridge is full of large homes that presumably belong to affluent people. None of the homes are mansions, but they are not modest. A quick glance at Realtor.com shows several listings for Stonebridge homes going for $500K to $1 million.
