Spin off tv shows - Parent vs child

What are the TV spin off shows, meaning which show was first and spun off another show? Also indicate if you think the parent or child show is better.

Examples are "Love American Style" started "Happy Days".

All in the Family begat both The Jeffersons and Maude.

IMO - All in the Family was best, though Maude was a close second. All 3 were very popular.

Mary Tyler Moore begat three - Phyllis, Rhoda., and Lou Grant.

MTM the best - Phyllis only lasted one season, and the character was too unlikeable, IMO. My girlfriend at that time loved Rhoda, but I was never a big fan. Lou Grant was a good light-drama, but the character of Lou (Ed Asner) was totally different in the two shows. The comical scenery-chewing Lou of MTM would have been unbelievable in a drama.

Technically, All in the Family also begat Archie Bunker's Place and Gloria as well.

Then there was the lamentable 704 Hauser...

Happy Days - Laverne & Shirley, Mork & Mindy.

Also Joanie Loves Chachi and Blansky's Beauties (I'd say HD was the best of the 4. Mork faded badly by the 2nd season).

Diff'rent Strokes gave us The Facts of Life and Hello Larry. I'd go with Facts. Too many Very Special Eps of DS.

Phyllis was on for 2 seasons. It did well the first season, but the second season, the show moved to a different timeslot, & the ratings dropped. It was cancelled around the same time The Mary Tyler Moore Show was cancelled. I personally didn't care for the show when I saw it in syndication.

As for some shows I remember that were spun off

Beverly Hills 90210 gave us Melrose Place

Beverly Hills 90210 also gave us The Heights

Melrose Place gave us Models, Inc (too bad this show didn't succeed, because I liked it).

Family Guy gave us The Cleveland Show

Three's Company spun off The Ropers

Three's Company later became Three's A Crowd.

How would the various Star Trek shows count? I'd take it that The Next Generation would count as a sequel, Deep Space Nine and Voyager could be considered spinoffs, and Enterprise would be a prequel.

Also, could Newhart count as a spinoff of The Bob Newhart Show since everything in the final show turned out to be Bob Hartley's dream?

Mentioning All in the Family's spinoffs made me think that there are only a few shows that would have had a second generation of spinoffs. There would be Good Times and Checking In with AITF, and I guess that Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and possibly Enterprise would count from Star Trek, and I guess the Happy Days spinoffs would count from Love American Style. Are there any others, and are there any shows that would possibly have a third generation spinoff or more?

1st gen: JAG, 2nd gen: NCIS, 3rd Gen: NCIS, Los Angeles

CSI and all its spinoff shows. Not sure which begat what.

Don't forget that "MASH" begat "Trapper John, MD" and "After MASH" -- although the latter was certainly forgettable.

There was an unpurchased pilot called W*A*L*T*E*R starring Gary Burghoff considered a spinoff. Trapper was considered a sequel to the film, not the tv series.

Bigest example of a spinoff that overshadowed its parent show? The Simpsons, which began as short cartoon skits within the Tracey Ullman Show in 1987-88, and by the end of 1989 had spun off to become its own half-hour sitcom. 500 episodes later (as of February 19, 2012) it's the longest running situation comedy in the history of American television.

I forgot about those. I guess that all the different Law & Order shows would count as well.

You can tell from the show titles. The original is CSI. If it wasn't the original, it would have to be called CSI: Las Vegas, right? CSI premiered in 2000, the horrid CSI: Miami in 2002, and CSI: New York in 2004.

There was an attempted Brady Bunch spinoff involving a couple who adopted three young boys, each of them of different races. They were all friends, but by adoption became brothers. I don't think that this particular pilot was ever picked up, otherwise I would remember more about it! ;D I seem to recall that the Bradys themselves only made minor cameo appearances in the episode from which the spinoff series was attempted.

In the "parent vs. child" analogy, I would call this attempt at a spinoff a "miscarriage"! ;D
