Spinning The Dial Today

The issue is not competition, it is the decreasing appeal of the format and its tendency to attract only older white men.
The WERS format is alt-rock and indie rock based and skews young, many currents and songs from recent years. It definitely skews younger than the area commercial AAA "The River" WXRV.

Pretty much guaranteeing that whatever listeners the station has are mostly either relatives or friends of the DJs.
Zumix is a non profit org that brings the arts and arts programs and communications programs to city youth and underserved communities - workshops, classes, development etc. They do everything from music instrument lessons to teaching recording/studio engineering and more. They are nationally recognized. Its a great program and im glad they got the LPFM license a couple years back. I know someone involved who pours their soul into that org. The radio station is just a fraction of what they do.

I caught Lady D. on WXLO this morning. I do not know if she was a guest host, or just filling in instead?

Last night WROR was broadcasting a Sports game? It kind of came of a surprise to me!

Mix 104.1 adopted a Rhythmic feel wirhin just the past couple of years.i think with them no longer being straight forward Hot AC is actually hurting then!

They air Celtics games which conflict with Bruins games airing on 98.5.

Those are what the hits are. Their problem is that they just can't and don't do the hits better for adults than the 43-year old CHR does. No station has stuck more pins into a Matty voodoo doll than Mix 104.1.

The Barenaked Ladies Mix of 20 years ago (while more interesting than their current incarnation) is not viable. You think they're doing badly with dance-pop, imagine if the format was all second-rate American Idol contestants and second albums from alternative acts whom CHR dropped after the first album.

WXLO is a palatable listen, Mix'es R&B/Rhythmic lean is not. Last night they played No Diggity? A song that used to only get played on Rhythmic music stations. Kiss 108 may or may not have played way back when. WXLO on the other hand, would avoid it instead. Yes, artists like Dua Lipa, but not Dr. Dre though.

Keep in mind that the audience is constantly changing as is musical taste. This is a 25 year old song. It's become mainstream. The way stations program music is aiming at a specific target audience. This song now fits that target, even in Boston.

My point is that Mix is now much more R&B focused than mainstream Hot AC stations. Then again, when have they ever been typical most of time during their existence?

Mix needs to be tweaked perhaps, not ditched.

WXLO increasing its signal in the heart of Boston in the past couple years certainly isn't helping Mix 104.1's cause.

That said, Mix 104.1 earns respectable numbers, I suspect, in the demos that matter. There is no alternative (no pun intended) that would perform better. Hot AC / Adult CHR is the proper format for that signal. Moreover, Mix 104.1 and Big 103 complement one another nicely for sales purposes.

Now do I really need to post a playlist comparison?

Two from Sheeran in less than an hour? A Sam Hunt country crossover? Lil Nas X and Adele back to back? "Fancy Like" into "Crash Into Me"? Certainly plenty of rhythm here, but it looks more like a current/recurrent-leaning Jack format than anything else.

Sorry, my search brought up the wrong station.

AAA is a very troubled music format today. It is a generally a very old leaning format, and as many markets become more ethnic, there are fewer listeners. An aging format that basically appeals to older non-Hispanic white guys has limited audience.

Averaging Oct-Nov-Dec, they had a 1.4. The normal range is in the low 1's. They average 22nd among all stations. For an AAA, it is unusual as it gets the same share in 18-34 as it gets in 65 and older.

The issue is not competition, it is the decreasing appeal of the format and its tendency to attract only older white men.
WXRT and KBCO does very well for a station in its format

Two from Sheeran in less than an hour?

Not out of the question in 2022 with tighter rotations.
A Sam Hunt country crossover?

I (expletive) hate that song...but it fits on a station for basic suburban women.
Lil Nas X and Adele back to back?

Why not? You make it sound like Lil' Nas X is NWA.
"Fancy Like" into "Crash Into Me"?

Maybe a little jarring erawise, but if anything, the bigger offense is Walker and Sam Hunt in the same half-hour.
Certainly plenty of rhythm here, but it looks more like a current/recurrent-leaning Jack format than anything else.

They certainly hold true to the variety mission in this hour. I think the problem for Mix is that they're too close to sister Magic. They cannibalize each other instead of complementing each other. KOST and KBIG is the template for how to do that well.

So like where is WXLO's list for comparison?

I am amazed how WROR has become the quintessential 80's station, all the while maintaining their branding image!

I am equally amazed how they are even able to play artists such as Twisted Sister Sister, Beastie Boys, Flock Of Seagulls, and yet still manage to play Don Henley, Van Morrison, Peter Frampton, Billy Joel, Hall & Oates, etc. Sometimes playing 4 separate genres back to back!

I doubt that any station would attempt to try to topple them, although I would not put it padt Audacy at all.

BTW, does anyone feel like the smart alecky voice over on Big 103 has gotten stale and annoying at this point as well?

I (expletive) hate that song...but it fits on a station for basic suburban women. [referring to "Body Like a Backroad"]
I'm a country listener and have serious problems with, it seems, every other song Hunt puts out. I hated "Body," liked "Breaking Up Was Easy in the 90s," hated "Kinfolks," and like his current hit, "23." I'm surprised "23" isn't the crossover, frankly.
