Split-national coverage of LCS

When anyone hears how Fox is going to split the country between NLCS and ALCS on Wednesday night, could you post here? In the past it was more clear-cut, with practically the whole country getting BOS-NYY. I'm interested in seeing who gets what game on Fox, with of course the other game headed to FX.

If what we're getting in Phoenix is any indication, most of the country will get the Sox-Angels on Fox and the Cards-Astros on FX. Markets in Texas, Missouri, and surrounding states will probably be exceptions, of course.

Even though the Angels and White Sox are the 2nd teams in their respective cities, the ALCS is still #2 LA vs #3 Chicago. That's apparently still the top series as far as Fox is concerned. Joe Buck & Tim McCarver will be doing that game tonight. AFAIK, Thom Brennaman & Steve Lyons will be doing the NLCS.

I thought the fact that the Sox and Angels ain't the Cubs & Dodgers as far as popularity, plus the ex-Yankee factor in Houston (Clemens & Pettite) vs the best team in baseball in St. Louis would drive Fox to emphasise the NLCS now. Taking care of the biggest markets is apparently still Job One for Fox.

But for the record, I'm not complaining. I'm a lifelong Sox fan who's been waiting since 1959 to get revenge on anything Los Angeles (even if it is their other team). :-D

The split in the state of Illinois should be especially interesting, considering that the Cardinals have a huge fan base in the state. I wonder which game the Fox affiliates in Peoria and the Quad Cities will show?

That's a great question and I'm interested to see the answer. Purely a guess here, but I say Cardinals. It seems like they have a pretty good stronghold as far north as Peoria, splitting that area with the Cubs. It doesn't seem the White Sox have as strong a following as the Cubs or Cards that far out, but then again this is purely a guess.
I bet the Sox are shown in the Quad Cities.

Would this be due to WGN-TV carriage of the Cubs games for decades? I assume WGN even before "superstation" designation was carried by a lot of cable companies. I remember whent the White Sox were on Channel 44 (then an English Language Station). The lower budget coverage by WSNS-TV 44 was pretty second rate. <P ID="signature">______________

Wow. Amazing stuff. I've had so much Red Sox and Yankees shoved my way, I thought FOX would cease coverage without either team in the hunt.

Ah..but theres Joe Bucks Cardinals, so theres life left on the tube...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Thank goodness we get NLCS here in Big D. The Stros and Cards is a much more exciting series than CHI/ANA, oh, sorry, LAA. First the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, then the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. What next? How bout the Dis-oriented People of Anaheim.

hahahaha. Im just joking with you, southern cal.

GO STROS!!

According to their website, KFXA Cedar Rapids, IA is carrying the Sox although the Cards probably have more fans in this area.

The White Sox' lack of a regional fan base compared to the Cubs and Cards owes to a whole bunch of factors, but that's one of them, yes.

I don't have the time/energy to look it up right now, but if the Sox are being shown in Cedar Rapids I'd guess the Quad Cities is getting the ALCS game as well, since the Bears get top priority there for football broadcasts.

Here in between NYC/Boston, WTIC-TV (FOX) channel 61 of Hartford will be airing the ALCS game 2. Unlike the past two years, I barely watched an inning of game 1. Truthfully, I don't care who wins the World Series now. No Yankees or no arch-enemy to root against (Boston).

I wish Cedar Rapids was a Nielsen metered market (meaning that overnight ratings showing the previous day's household viewership are available in the morning) -- I'd love to see a ratings comparision between FX in that market (which will have the Cards) vs. KFXA.

Why is Fox even doing this??

They should have had game 2 of the ALCS start at 5:05 P.M. EDT, with game 1 of the NLCS at 8:20 P.M. EDT. If game 1 of the ALCS were still underway at 8:20, KTVI-2 St. Louis and KRIV-26 Houston would have been switched to game 1 of the NLCS with the rest of the network following suit once the ALCS game ended.

That would have been interesting. I switched back and forth but it was on FX the majority of the time as I am an NL fan.

That's too loaded with common sense!! Daytime playoff games worked as recently as 1993. Guess they're scared to try them now? The players wouldn't complain, don't think the fans would mind, but what do they matter?

5 PM EDT is 4 PM in Chicago and 2 PM in LA. People are either still at work or driving home in both cities at that time. Can't watch the game on TV if you're still working or commuting.

If anything, the NLCS should have started first, at 6 PM EDT (5 PM in both NL cities), then the ALCS at 9 PM EDT (8 PM in Chicago and 6 PM in LA). If there's an overlap then the first part of the ALCS could then be put on FX.

There are no teams from the Eastern time zone playing so what time the games start in that area doesn't mean anything. Those folks in the east who want to watch the ALCS wouldn't be put out that much by a 9 PM start. Monday Night Football starts at 9 PM EDT, why not a baseball game?

This is baseball's problem: People who root for their teams are not truly fans of the game.
A 'baseball fan' would just enjoy watching the best teams in baseball play for a spot in the World Series. I put myself in this category.
'Fans of their teams' refuse to watch as soon as 'their guys' are out of it.
It's as if all the people who swore off watching baseball in '94 when the strike started, relented only as far as their local teams were concerned, but do not consider themselves 'baseball fans' otherwise.

World Series ratings may not be at their mid-80s levels(blame that on CBS ruining the 'Game of the Week'in the early '90s, as well as the strike, and Fox's 'show regional games, but spend the whole telecast talking about New York' approach, which actually created something of a ratings backlash against the Yankees' most recent World Series) However, the Fall Classic will easily give Fox the best ratings for that week, and the fact that no team appears to be a 'superpower' this year makes it more likely for a 6 or 7 game Series.

And I say this as a resident of a two-team market (Northern California), who hopes the Cardinals win this year's Series(I could go either way on the ALCS, but I AM watching it!):)

> Why is Fox even doing this??
>
> Blah blah blah>

Ratings. Last time Fox carried a scheduled Game 2 of an LCS in the afternoon(2001, Diamondbacks-Braves), nobody watched.
Apparently, they really do get higher ratings with the split coverage
At least they give viewers the option of watching the other game on FX, avoiding the blunder the 'Baseball Network' made a decade ago, when all playoff games were on simultaneously at 8 Eastern time, and they just went to late local news rather than cutting to other games as soon as a game ended.
