Spoiler Alert: WCBS-FM Top 500 Results-Labor Day Wknd 2012

Posted below is the list that as of this posting (Sun. afternoon 9/2) is in its second run-through. Likely will wrap up between 7pm - Midnight on Monday evening 9/3/12. Sometimes the list gets backed up/reset on Monday morning so that the last 200 or so records will air from 6am ET Monday to conclusion. Or, if it ends earlier than expected (especially since they've been going straight through including the overnights), they might repeat the top 50 or top 101 to fill time.

This year's version, unlike the last 3 (2009-2011) has been noticeably streamlined, sanitized and softened with most of the classic rock tracks removed along with any "oh, wow!" tracks. As with most (all?) of these listener-voted surveys, likely every song played received at least some votes, but not every song that received enough votes made the list.

Unlike the "Michael Jackson" effect on the 2009 list upon his passing that placed "Thriller" at #1, there are no Whitney Houston entries, even though there were several possible tunes in the 1985-1987 range that could have fit the confines. (1987 is the latest entry date for original recordings; there are 3 on this list.) The brick wall is up at the late 1980s boundary; "The Bodyguard" era (early 1990s) is apparently way too "early" to be broached on this (and likely most) classic hits outlets.

If one was listening and didn't hear the announcements/promos/sweepers, they'd think it was just the good ol' regular CBS-FM format playing. All in its (in)glorious, crappy processing (duly noted on other threads).

The unofficial tote board (in honor of Jerry Lewis) - the numbers are close; my eyes are just too blurry to count again:

1950s: 2
1960s: 134
1970s: 283
1980s: 79.5
1990s: 1.5

The "half (.5)" figures account for the few songs that have had two chart lives in different decades; I decided to split those entries into halves just to keep the total number at 500 entries.

For songs that straddled the December/January fence, I used the earlier year as a reference; shouldn't make much difference overall.

The following list is taken from the initial airing that ran from Fri. 8/31/12 @ 6:04am ET to Sat. 9/1/12 @ 7:17pm ET:

I wonder how much of a bonus the consultant gets for putting this together ;D

Not to rain on your parade, but that's not what consultants do...

"Your Song" sticks out as the lone "Huh?" song in the top 10. Is this really a huge New York favorite? I don't think it's even played anymore on WDRC-FM here in Connecticut -- what we hear by EJ is primarily "Philadelphia Freedom," "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting," "Daniel" and "Rocket Man."

The "Brown Eyed Girl" phenomenon continues to astound me. How did this non-No. 1 from 1969 become the must-play song of the oldies/classic hits format for the past 25 years?

David, to make my point clear from the "San Francisco" thread, this is exactly what I'm talking about.

Is it too much to ask for that other classic hits stations around the country, including KRTH have nice specialties like this Top 500 countdown?? Look at the variety in this list. If a major market like NYC can do this, so could others....simple.

Actually 1967 CT. It amazes me too. Who knows maybe it's been featured in movies or something. At least "Hey Jude" is #1, or should it have been "You Light Up My Life" or "Physical" if we go by chart rankings?? ;D

It's probably the most wildly positive song from the era in today's research.

Remember, the song did not chart as high as it might have in it's release year of 1967 because of the lyric reference to "makin' love in the green grass..." which was not considered as tame back then as it is now. That affected its play on many stations... and also caused many to go on the song late, making no single week a #1 week.

Every station has its own way of dealing with the very, very low "Persons Using Radio" figures on long weekends.

In the case of KRTH, I'd have to guess that the fact that half their listening comes from Hispanics has much to do with the differences between CBS-FM and the LA station. Hispanics born outside the US are not as familiar with many of the cuts on the CBS list as people in New York would be. Also, the much lower use of radio in cars in New York changes this and quite a few other things in that market and in that market alone.

Actually 1967 CT. It amazes me too. Who knows maybe it's been featured in movies or something.

Speaking of songs that got a bump from the movies, I see "Unchained Melody" is way down at No. 259 this year. After 21 years, the "Ghost" effect seems to be fading.

Sounds about right......thanks for the insight. :)

Thank you WCBS FM for the Top 500, Here is Boston, we had a similar countdown on Labor Day Weekend on sister station WODS. Now that WODS is Amp Radio, the countdown in Beantown is gone. Too Bad

In the Still of the Night which was #1 for years on Top 500 countdowns on the old WCBS-FM did not even make this survey. They must have suppressed any Doo Wop hits that received votes. My favorite - Like a Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan didn't make this survey.

Only two from the '50s on the entire list -- "Jailhouse Rock" and "Mack the Knife." Either they've succeeded in driving almost all the 55+ crowd away from the station or, as you say, they either ignored votes for doo-wop or gave them lower value. It's just a countdown show, not a contest with prizes, so there's nothing that says the vote-counting has to be on the up and up. Nobody's going to be auditing the results.

Corrected previously in thread. Thanks anyway. I am doubly chastised and will never make that mistake again.

It looks like "In the Still of the Nite" by the Five Satins never made it to the list. What's wrong with you? This song is still the #1 oldie of all time in the NY "Top 500" for years and years. This is not the way it looks for a "Top 500". What's going to happen to CBS-FM in the future "Top 500", add more 90's songs to list, for example "I'm Every Woman" by Whitney Houston, that might be an example for CBS-FM back in March where they played that song as part of "March Madness" weekend, and that song is 20 years old and music from the 90's are the new oldies. Take REM's "Losing My Religion", C+C Music Factory's "Gonna Make You Sweat", Madonna's "Vogue" or many other songs from the 90's to throw in for a future "Top 500". I would love to hear "In the Still of the Nite" by the Five Satins going back to #1 again, but "Earth Angel" by the Penguins is also the #2 oldie for years and years, but I hope this should go back on top along with "In the Still of the Nite". Let's see what happens next year.

If you ever attended a wedding reception. This is one of the most requested songs. Some songs won't go away.

If you ever wanted to get a feel of what is happening on the music scene (as far as classic hits oldies)
survey a wedding reception. If ratings are not available in your market.

It's not science, but mirrors the pulse of what is happening on your dial.

The list must change, some great songs must go, to make room for others. Time to make room for the next decade.

Doo wop now takes the place of big band/standards in moving the decades up in the game of life. The 80's now make their appearance. Yes, I am now old along with Pat Benetar. We both can both join AARP. ;D
