Spokane's 105.7

Looks like yet another format change for 105.7 in Spokane. They were the Peak...then became the Buzzard, then back to the Peak....and as of Monday.....it's "Now 105.7." CHR Music with Elvis Duran in the morning, Ryan Seacrest in the afternoon and NO local live personalities of any kind that I have heard.....My only observation is this: no overhead with no local live people......yet another FM music box. Be interesting to see how it competes with 92-9/KZZU and with 103-1/KCDA. There isn't alot to listen to on the right side of the dial.....makes me wonder how many folks will dial down that far to check it out....guess only time will tell....

*sigh*

At least as the Peak they were offering something unique to the market. The indie/modern alternative niche.

Now, we get CHR? Interesting thought. Sounds to me like they want the female 18-35 demo. Spokane has always been a weird one for pop music. KZZU for many years dominated that format and made it work. In a sign of the times, even KZZU moved away from it. The trends I've read that the younger the age group is, the less likely they are to listen. CHR would be an inherently bad choice being it skews young. Perhaps as JJ pointed out, its about overhead. They know they won't grab anything above a 3.0, but with minimal costs it could sustain itself.

I always thought the folks at 105.7 should've rebranded themselves as "ROCK 106" and brought back all the old logos. When the station was the Buzzard, it was a PERFECT opportunity for that. No KEZE calls, but still would've been opportunity to embrace the frequencies heritage and get noticed. The old timers who listened in the 80s/90s would come back just to see what is going on. Forget about the conflict with KHTQ ROCK 94.5, even though its branded ROCK to many 30 and 40 somethings who were here ROCK 106 was the original. My hunch they would come back.

Alas, it was never to be. Would've been a lot of fun.

I hope 105.7 beets both of them as I was listening to kzzu in in the morning and during the day they suck and 103.1 I never thought they were good either and 105.7 sounded better than both of them

A few people that I work with were upset that Neal Boortz and Laura Ingraham got cut back on 790 last week to make room for Bob & Tom. I'll tell them on Monday about 105.7 format change that bumped Bob & Tom.

Thanks!

It's been almost two weeks since "The Peak" became "Now 105.7" and I've heard NO street talk---NOTHING from nobody, and don't hear them on anywhere. Be interesting to see if another non-local personality CHR station proves to be a futile experiment. A format like this needs to be exciting, and at least somewhat LIVE AND LOCAL---IF it is going to succeed.....Or at least voicetrakked by local people who can talk about what is happening in "The Lilac City." Sure, it's great to hear all about the Hollywood stuff.....but when you include NOTHING LOCAL(our league champion Shock, our baseball team the Indians, and other stuff that is uniquely Spokane---like---"a great day to take your dog and enjoy Manito Park...") .....you're not going to win. You may grab a few #'s in the younger demos....but that's not gonna get you alot of biz. Just my humble opinion........

There is an article in the "Today" section of the Spokesman-Review--Page D5. About the change of 105.7. Doesn't look like they even interviewed anyone from Mapleton(the owners) about the change. Just stated the obvious---The Peak to The Buzzard back to the The Peak, and "Now 105.7 FM." A mention about Elvis Duran on in the morning and Ryan Seacrest in the afternoon. Again with NOTHING local I look for this to be another futile attempt to re-format a station.

In my humble opinion---this will fail as well. Sad......the state of radio in the 21st century, especially in a top-100 market. Sure, it may cost a few bucks, but make an investment and make it live, local and fun...and in awhile really reap the rewards....but alas....it's me just dreaming about the "good old days......"

No JJ I think you're spot on! When I first saw the format changed (again) I was very curious to find out more but I got my idea right away with how lame the station would be when I saw that Seacrest is the afternoon drive show. I mean come on...thats just plain cheap and lazy and unfortunately is exactly how they operate up there on 57th. At last check I think there are like maybe 4 at people at max running all 7 stations at any given time, so the fact they they are pumping out another format like this is no shocker!

I will say that I think Elvis Duran was a good choice for a good syndicated morning show. I wold've gone with MJ out of Tampa but none the less Elvis does a great show. But outside of that maybe move Seacrust to middays and pop a little bit for at least a live afternoon host. In Spokane (as we all know) you don't have to pay someone alot for them to live fairly comfortably. But without question a good hit music station should always have (at the very least mind you) a live afternoon host and a live night host.

That's my humble opinion...plus my disgust with lazyness of Cita-MapletonCorp

Bob and Tom are gone. Neal Boortz is on from 9-noon again.

The folks that I work with are real happy. They said that they called the station to complain.

Looks like more program shuffling....Bob & Tom have moved from 790/KJRB are now up the dial on the the station lowering their power from 50KW to just 15KW--not sure IF it's already happened. 1510/KGA---KGA dumped "Mitch In The Morning"---which was simply a simulcast from KJR-AM/950 in Seattle. And they returned Laura Ingraham and Neal Bortz to their previous positions--Laura 6-9 and Neal from 9-12 n 790/KJRB. Bob & Tom are a good syndicated show for a Classic Rock station. But on a sports station that can't seem to garner even a 1 share???? You never know!

IMHO stuff like this drives typical listeners NUTZ! It's hard for the average person to keep switching around on the radio looking for something they like. Human beings don't like change, especially jockeying around stuff like this. Again, just my humble opinion. Could it be stuff like this that insures Mapleton WILL NOT be a winner in the Spokane Market. They have occasional bright spots....but overall....a very dim bulb. Heard they may have a new GM coming in for the cluster...wonder if that will make a difference....only time will tell!

It's interesting, but apparently KPIG-AM, (the station to benefit from the downgrade of KGA) is BBQ Pork Fried Rice as 1510 in the Bay Area flipped to all Chinese recently.

I'm really not sure what the point in downgrading KGA is. But Mapleton always sounds so asleep at the wheel anyway...

I'm not sure Mapleton views Spokane as one of their main markets. More than likely, Spokane is very low on the priority from a competition and resource standpoint.

What was Mapleton's #1 reason for buying the cluster from Citadel? Yup, hold the applause... to get a hold of and kill KGA's class A status so they could upgrade 1510 in San Francisco. Outside of that, they will voicetrack and satellite feed this market till the roosters come home. They know the heritage properties of Clear Channel and Morgan Murphy are in good hands, so in essence its status quo like the Citadel days; fighting for the crumbs of the other guys. It's almost futile to take them head on.

If they still lose money, then they'll toss this cluster aside. It has served its purpose now.

I love this board! Every prediction on this topic has been wrong! The station has plenty of live and local talent on it, and it's not a ratings disaster. The last time I checked allaccess.com, it listed the station as a 5.2 12+ - making it 4th in the market beating The Zoo.

HAHAHAHA uhh...lets see...they have a night guy. The rest of their main dayparts are syndicated or automated! Sorry that doesnt exactly qualify as "plenty" of "live and local talent"! And I never predicted that the station would exactly be a ratings failure. Sadly many lame stations have good ratings periods. I do however stand by my biggest point that NOW 105.7 is a here and now pump-and-dump format that, you watch, once the format starts losing any kind of traction they will quickly blow it up for the next short-lived quick buck idea. Thats been the tragedy of 105.7 for the past decade. The Peak, The Buzzard, and The Peak again were all victims of itchy trigger fingers...well that and lack of care and attention for growth! So I'm sorry, I'm not sold that this station is a huge success. Now if its still around in 5 yrs and it sounds less and less like canned meat...well then yeah I'll gladly admit that I was wrong and nobody gets hurt.

Oh I see butlin...now (or NOW) that the station is a 6.9 (according to allaccess.com) and ranked #3 12+ in less than a year, you revise your statement to say that NOW-FM has to last 5 years to be a success. Look back on this thread; all posting predict a dismal showing for NOW-FM. You all are WORNG! I would love to get a job there, I think it sounds GREAT!

Oh dear lord, again...What statement did I revise?? I'll say it again, where in my first post did I even mention the ratings??? I DIDN'T! And I never said the words "HAS to last 5 yrs to be successfull" now did I? So I'm not gonna argue any further because my points in my posts are right there clear as crystal so if you disagree, fine, but please do not twist them by putting words in my mouth or accuse me of saying things I didnt say!

That being said, if you want a job at NOW...go for it. If something works out for you then more power to ya!
