Sport Chix cryptic farewell message

F

FloridaBear1776

Guest
During the last show, BL relayed a conversation with "the boss" and said everyone should "keep an eye" on the 1010 website for future developments, and "check in" (on the frequency?) every month or so...

What does this mean?

Speculation: CBSR considering a FreeFM on one of its FMs? My candidate would be WSJT, which continues to be solid but faces the problem of the aging of the Smooth Jazz demo longterm. Is it the best possible use of a 100 kW Class C on a stick that reaches across to the other coast? Such a music intensive format would be quickly snapped up by Cox if CBSR dropped it, maybe even to place on 102.5, which is where it started in this market almost 20 years ago.

Since its inception, aside from a few changes in the morning show...a stint by Cleveland Wheeler...comic Bobby Collins....its been the station with the least turnover..and I'm sure continues to bill very well.

Unless the money goes away, Smooth Jazz will stay.

Every other big market is getting Free FM formats, but WBZZ-AM 1010 can't become a Free FM format, its AM not FM. But if they take WSJT as you say and for some stupid reason throw it on AM 1010 then they could take 94.1FM and make it Free FM or even 'The Bone 102.5' which I think sucks anyways so it has my vote for Free FM.

WSJT bills a tremendous amount of money with a lower overhead than MOST stations. I love how some stupid little hint by a cancelled Sport Chick led to the speculation that a very successful LOCAL station would be blown up for some yet-to-be-proven FM talk format with all out of market personalities.
The chance for FREE FM to land in the Tampa market went out the door when 92.5 flipped Spanish.

I totally agree and adding to what Brian said... The Free-FM format and list of hosts they have isn't even proven yet. In my opinon, they're trying it out in too many markets as it is... but I guess the thinking is most of these Stern stations are gonna tank anyway so what do they have to lose. As far as us in Florida, CBS has a good billing set of stations in the bay area with 92.5 still new to the Spanish arena. I'd imagine that if that format fails AND the Free-FM works in other places, you'd see it here on 92. No other FM in Tampa Bay probably has more a dedicated and deep pocket listener than WSJT. And it's for that reason it would be stupid to blow it up. If the station had 1's and 2's for ratings I could see it, right now it just aint gonna happen.

Though these days, nothing's too "stupid" for CBS -- like changing from oldies to "Jack" on WCBS-FM in New York.

Where could the SportChix end up then? Tan Talk 1340 again?

I doubt they will end up anywhere on the radio in Tampa Bay. At some point every show and every air talent's shift comes to an end. I'd bet money that this is the end of the line for those girls on the radio. They should be proud that they hung around the AM dial as long as they did. Unless sponsors of the show want to continue to pay for airtime somewhere, they're done.

1470?!?!?

Given Bruce Maduri's prudishness, not likely. It's no more a possibility than the Sport Chix ending up on a Salem station.

Long before landing on 1010, the Hooters folks were shopping the girls everywhere to get off of Dave and Lola's island. The Genesis folks rejected several overtures to get the girls on 1040 back when they were still big in the pay for play days (remember Larry Hirsch and Jim Karvellas). Maduri would not even entertain the possibility. He is very strict on his family first approach and this has severely hamepered his sports efforts in Tampa and Orlando.
