Sporting News Radio and 1560

As a 1560 The Game listener, I'm just curious as to how many affiliates Sporting News Radio has. I know that KGOW is an affiliate and apparently is now the flagship station since David Gow purchased SNR, but how many other stations actually subscribe to SNR's broadcasts? And one other thing, when in the heck is 1560 finally going to fix their lousy morning and evening signals?

There's probably 15 or 16 affiliates, although like KGOW they pick and choose the shows they carry.

The night signal is as fixed as it's ever going to get. It used to be much worse. There's nothing else they can do to it without buying up adjacent stations to shut them down. It's gone from a puny stick off of Hillcroft that couldn't even reach the west loop to 15,000 watts out of Jersey Village on a 9 tower directional. However, if you're not in pretty much a straight line from Jersey Village to Bellaire & beyond it's a tough get at night. Cypress, Galleria, Sugar Land, Missouri City, West U, Katy, no problem. Downtown Houston? Good luck. Considering the station started out as a daytime only operation, the fact that they've been able to get this much out of something so high on the dial is pretty impressive.

As for KGOW and their "lousy signal in the mornings and evenings" - here's the reason - During daytime hours, KGOW broadcasts its signal from a tower near Rosharon at a strength of 50,000 watts. At night, the signal broadcasts from a tower in Bellaire at a strength of 1,000 watts. Currently, KGOW is constructing a 15,000 watts night transmitter in the Katy-Hockley area; once the transmitter is online, it will be the second-strongest night-time signal in the city of Houston.

Be glad that KGOW isn't a true day-timer only, meaning that they sign on during this time at approx. 6:30am and sign-off at approx. 5:30pm.

The guys/gals overseeing everything over at KGOW are doing a fantastic job with all that they're doing - and no, I don't personally know anyone who works there nor do I work there myself - just sayin', that's all.

According to the Sporting News Radio website, they have 175+ terrestrial stations and I believe they are on Sirius/XM. I don't really think many of those stations are full time though. A lot of them just carry a couple of shows or carry SNR on the weekends or evenings.

I would like to second that statement. I have never met a group of broadcasters that were so into what they do. I do know some of them personally and I find them to be a top notch operation with a serious passion for sports. And NO, I don't work there either...

The 15,000 watt transmitter site has been on the air for at least a year. It was licensed in January 2010. Trust me, I wouldn't be able to hear them at night without it. But you're right, it's out in Katy, not Jersey Village as I wrote above.

However, it's directional as all get out, so if you're not in the pattern, it doesn't matter how many watts they're pumping out, you're not going to hear it. Unlike the 1,000 watt night site it replaced, you can actually hear it outside of the transmitter site's parking lot. The old site couldn't make it to the loop.

I just wonder if the night signal is strong enough for 1560 to eventually get one of the big three sports franchises some day? That kind of relationship would entrench them as a powerhouse here someday. They're doing a great job. Their new lineup is a big plus. TRog is a another really good alternative to Palillo and Lord in PM Drive. John and Sean were good, but IMHO I thought they played to too narrow of an audience. Their spots in the lineup now really works well for the station to give it more of a punch outside of John and Lance in AM Drive.

Got to give it to Gow. He and his group have done all they could so far to make that station work when most on this board didn't give them more than six months after they started.

My disclaimer: I do not work there, nor do I personally know anyone who works there.

Glad to see the "love" for 1560. It's obvious that the guys who work there are dedicated to its success, and they're probably not getting rich in return. I'm just concerned that they may never get their signal strength up to the level that would put them in the running for acquiring the rights to one of the big three local sports teams.

Here is the night pattern:

I was on the island recently and heard their signal. It was decent in spite of the maps perimeters. It's a great sounding radio station. Basically, there are only two locally owned stations on the AM band, KGOW and KCOH.

I'm a fan of "1560 The Game," and I don't work there either!

I haven't lived in Houston since before the new night towers went active ... how are the cancellation issues? I assume with that high dial position, there would be some across the area. I had looked forward to hearing the night signal in League City before I moved back to Ohio.

You'd be surprised at how many cities have three All-Sports stations, although in most cases, Sporting News Radio is the network on the third-ranked station.

In some markets, that means the station broadcasts most of the SNR schedule, especially if they're in the suburbs of a city with two sports stations that already have an ESPN affiliate and a Fox Sports affiliate. But as stated above, many stations only use network programming overnights and weekends.

There was a time when Sporting News and before that One on One Sports owned stations in NYC, LA and Miami that ran their programming around the clock, except for some play-by-play sports events. Eventually the owners ran into financial problems and sold those stations off. But they never stopped providing sports talk programming 24/7 for affiliates.

By the way, Houston has FOUR sports stations. So if 97.5 KFNC is running mostly ESPN, 790 KBME has Fox Sports and 1560 KGOW runs Sporting News, what does CBS-owned 610 KILT run overnights and weekends? KILT is the only one of the four to score better than a one-share. KFNC and KBME have only half of KILT's ratings and KGOW is even lower-rated.
