SPORTS 1140 TO GET COMPETITION

Word on "the street" -- specifically, Madison Avenue -- is that KHTK Sports 1140 is about to get competition. ESPN Radio is leaving CBS' top-rated sports outlet, and is reportedly heading down to Entercom's foundering KCTC-1320, probably by mid-spring.

ESPN provided KHTK with weekend programming; the NBA; MLB and some college football.

I doubt KHTK is worried. Chances are they'll pick up Fox Sports Radio affiliation. KHTK has The Sacramento Kings as well as 50,000 Watts. All KCTC has is 5000 Watts and no local sports team. I wonder if KSAC-1240 will pick up Air America again if KCTC drops them?

I prefer FOX Sports Radio over ESPN Radio. FOX Sports seems to lean to a younger audience and is more entertaining. I wish KHTK would air JT The Brick instead of Carmichael Dave. Isn't KNBR a FOX Sports affiliate? Wouldn't make sense to have 2 flamethrowers with the same programming. Thank god for satellite radio and online streaming!

Yo, slap -- you're half right. KNBR-680 is ESPN...KNBR-1050 (KTCT) is Fox Sports Radio.

And KHTK dropped all ESPN programming as of Friday, 2/9. FSR at the weekend; no more ESPN Extra Point at 10am...no more using ESPN when you have to fill when the host doesn't show...

The question is, can Sacramento support another sports station?

Thoughts?

I don't think so. When KMJI-1380 changed to Sports, it killed off then Sports KSAC-1240. Then when KHTK-1140 tweaked their format from Hot Talk to Sports, that pretty much killed off KMJI-1380.I think KHTK's 50,000 Watts will factor in to KCTC-1320 not succeeding in Sports.

I respectfully disagree. KHTK's programming is really an "All Kings" format, with non-sports programming in middays with The Don & Mike Show from D.C.'s WJKF and paid programming on Saturday and Sunday morning ("Talkin' Money with Jeff Tarbell, The Car Czar, a Harness Racing Show"). ln addition, once the Kings season winds down, KHTK is REQUIRED to carry the WNBA's Monarchs games, per their iron-clad Maloof Sports and Entertainment agreement (through 2011). On East Coast swings, KHTK may preempt 2-3 Sportsline 1140 Shows, featuring Grant Napear and Mike Lamb in a given week. I am aware of many sports fans who switch to KNBR's Fitz and Brooks show (M-F 12n-3p) during the Don & Mike Show, and you would be hard-pressed to find many sports fans who will listen to a Monarchs vs. Washington Mystics broadcast, at ANY time of the day. KMJI was really an afterthought, programmed by long-time Sacto MUSIC format DJ Tony Cox, and featuring Damon "The Dog" Perry as it's big (?) daily show. If 1320 switched to ESPN, you automatically gain credibility with Dan Patrick, Mike and Mike, the NBA, MLB, NASCAR, NFL and other big-time sports and programming NOT controlled by coverage of the Kings and Monarchs. I mean, how many different ways can you take calls about "Kenny Thomas or Shareef Abdur-Raheem...Who do you want as your starting power forward, Kings fans?"...

Even though KMJI was really an afterthought, they were more successful than KSAC-1240.

KHTK is a "MOSTLY ALL KINGS" station, not "ALL KINGS" station. As for KNBR, aren't they a "MOSTLY ALL GIANTS" station? On KNBR's local shows, isn't there mostly Giants talk?

KHTK has basically nothing to worry about. Sure Carmichael Dave is lame, but the
Kings are the only game in town.

What do you need to have a successful sports station? A 0.5? Entercom will sell it just fine, and KSAC could use the help from getting AAR back - I don't much fashion Dave Ramsey a progressive talker.

KCTC started out doing pretty well, and has a better investment in local talk then almost anyone doing the format. Haven't heard much of the Scott and whomever else show in AMD, but Enid Goldstein (of WIP, KFI, and most recently KNRC/Denver) is pretty decent. Makes Christine Craft sound like she's in market one hundred-27.

Has the KCTC switch to ESPN been inked yet? I hear that it's more than a rumor. Even though the market already has several strong male demo options, Sac is a sports town and should support two sports stations. KCTC's signal isn't really a problem.

What? Christine is lightyears ahead of Enid. Just because KSAC is a rinky dink radio station doesn't mean Christine's show is inferior. In fact, Christine show actually beats Enid in afternoon drive. It's the only time KSAC beats KCTC.

The only thing I can say about working in that dump was the Christine made it worthwhile. ::)

It will be soon if Entercom has it's way and unloads the station's night-time transmission site.

Wrong....KSAC was sold and changed to Regional Mexican months before KMJI went sports. Actually Ken Jonsson put some money behind the old KSAC.

Well Thank Goddness!!!
Maybe now winning teams will finally get the coverage they deserve. Honestly, I don't know how the Home of the Kings can survive in the afternoon talking about just two teams (Kings and NY Giants) 300 days of the year.
Hey two country's can survive, two news can survive, now "two" sports could survive. "Two" because HTK isn't a real sports station. Keep your arguments. It's a 21 Hour Maloof Infomercial. Hey it works for them.
No doubt KCTC will do sports right.
