Sports 56 to FM via W249BN 97.7

There is a new app for W249BN 97.7 filed today. New tower site is the WTWV tower with the antenna at the 600 ft level (ASR matches the WTWV tower).

W249BN
is currently licensed to operate with an effective radiated power (ERP) of 19 watts (BLFT-
20070627ACF). This application proposes to change the community of license to Memphis,
Tennessee, increase the effective radiated power to 250 watts and relocate its transmitter site
to another tower located near Bartlett, Tennessee. This application is classified as a minor
change as there will be contour overlap with the present and proposed 60 dBu contours. The
translator will become a fill-in translator for WHBQ(AM) at Memphis, Tennessee

It's fairly close to the coverage of most Class A's. Putting it up really high does wonders at low power.

this link will show you the 60dbu contour. http://g.co/maps/yregq

compare this to 107.5 and you will see how close in coverage it will be to a class A http://g.co/maps/ktv3x

WRLT a class A in Nashville is limited to only 200 watts because they are 1000 feet up a tower. Translators do not have to reduce power down from 250 watts to account for height like other class stations do.

Thanks, Michael, it will cover East Memphis and the burbs fairly well. 2 Sports stations on FM, will this have any effect on their ratings?

Transfer of control was filed with the FCC on 4/16.

Purchase price shows $77,000.

It does show WHBQ-AM as the intended station to broadcast.

The CP on this upgrade has been GRANTED. There can't be too much to do in getting it upgraded. A tower crew could do it in a weekend. Expect this on air soon. The signal will be unimpressive, I am thinking.

The machinations continue on the 103.1 translator, W276BH. An amendment was filed about a month ago, and it has yet to get an approval. I am not sure what the hold-up is. If/when it's granted, though, it will be a whopper with a 70 dBu to about the U-of-M and a 60 dBu to the river.

That is something I don't get at all. Why does Memphis have so many sports stations? Don't get me wrong, I love sports but considering the size of the city and the fact that Memphis is not a great sportstown, I just don't get it. It is funny but at work, we all (most men and women alike) talk about sports almost daily and we talk about pretty much everything from a golf tournament all the way to the NFL. We even occasionally talk about hockey. That seems rare around here because basically it is the SEC or nothing. To me, a real sports fan likes a variety of sports not just one particular thing. When I listen to Sports 56 for example, there are too many local shows. The hosts are good, but every show covers the same subject, with the same few callers. If they are talking Ole Miss football at 6 in the morning, then the 8 o'clock show, the 10 o'clock show, etc is going to discuss the same topic. It becomes so redundant. The few times I ever hear callers try to change the subject, the hosts seem to cut them off to stick to one or two subjects. To me, that is not entertaining radio. It certainly is not entertaining enough to justify more than one sports station.

I'll make an attempt to answer that. It sells. Even with little or no rating you can sell sports.

In many small towns local and regional sports keep salaries paid and the tower lights glowing. I worked at a 1kw AM that would have probably died with out sports.

It's much harder to sell a low rated niche format.

And THAT is how Chris Vernon sells 730 Yahoo Radio while NOT subscribing to the Arbitrons. So many people on here whined about him, but he has an audience and he wouldn't be selling the time that he does if they weren't loyal to Chris and his advertisers.

Looks like all systems are go for W249BN. The deal is approved by the FCC and it will carry Sports 56 WHBQ. I bet it pops up on the air very quickly.

can't wait...rain man and riverkings in stereo!

Well there has been a slight change.

This was accepted for filing today by the FCC:
It is proposed to change the primary station to
that of WOWW(AM) on 1430 kHz assigned to Germantown

I guess with 56 on 87.7 this makes some sense. Maybe someone will be able to hear it a little bit since 1430 sounds like it is operating with no ground or on low power.

The last mile of 60 dBu coverage for 97.7 was pretty choppy this morning. Probably getting a full on assault on both sides from Augusta, AR and Trenton, TN.

I'm assuming they have completed the upgrade -- Although, I do not see an application for a License to Cover yet. But...

I live right on the edge of the projected 60 dBu. And, yeah. They were getting some co-channel grief this morning with only mild enhancement. In the Spring, it will be rough.

Should 103.1 get built, the signal will be quite a bit better.

I am glad to have another option for news but I would hardly it unbiased. They just seem to hate both sides equally.

I'll stick to listening to 2m,70cm, and D-star. The conversations there are often more interesting than those on the radio half the time.
