With my $10 Sony hand-held analog AM/FM ICF-S10MK2, I get out-of-state sports stations, all the time - from Maryland, I was listening to WWL New Orleans (1000 air-miles) discuss their playoff loss, and WBBM Chicago (600 air-miles) discuss their playoff win, yesterday. Also, I listen to out-of-state Thursday night football games, all of the time.

Well as you may know, I am a HD supporter, all though I love analog still just as much, I would like to see HD on FM take off with some good sports covarage. I'm not much a fan of HD-AM but I dont listen much AM anyways most of what I listen on AM is sports.

No Westwood One Sports affiliate in your area? I believe they were carrying the game and will also be carrying the Super Bowl as well. Otherwise, it's WBBM 780 in Chicago for local play-by-play of Da Bears. The Colts are on FM (WFBQ, I think) in Indianapolis and mostly smaller stations (AM and FM) elsewhere in Indiana, so you won't get them in Texas.
The problem with sports on AM at night is the same as other programming on AM at night: With relatively few listeners tuning in compared to daytime, the AM dial is filled with dozens of stations carrying the three national sports networks, except for the large markets that still carry local talk at night. Many of the 50 kW stations still carry pro sports, but if you're looking for college sports, most of them are on smaller stations.
Here in Phoenix, my choices for out-of-town pro sports are pretty much restricted to KNBR 680 San Francisco and KOA 850 Denver on a regular basis. The LA sports stations are on smaller signals that don't reach Phoenix (read: all of them except KFI and KNX) and I only rarely get the San Diego stations. I'm better off listening to games on the internet if I want to pay for them (which I do only for baseball).
It's much better back east and in the midwest where there are more Class 1A (as they used to be called) stations, but out here, few of the west coast stations beam inland. They don't have to - their market areas are strictly along the coast and maybe 50 miles inland, so many of them are directional north-and-south. They don't care if I want to hear them in Phoenix.
KTRH use to be a westwood one, I was able to get them almost anywere, but now they quit. kvet-am isnt strong worth anything and niether is 760 in San antonio. 760 use to be a blowtorch at night, I could get them all the way to the coast. Now they hardly make it out of San antonio at night. I still refuse to pay for radio, so I gues I'll just half to keep surfing around untill maybe something might happen and someone will get stronger at night!

KTKR 760 San Antonio only runs 1000 watts at night, so I'm not suprised they don't make it out of their metro after dark. They should be good during the day if you're south of San Antonio with their 50 kW and directional antenna. KVET 1300 Austin is a medium-powered station (5 kW days, 1 kW nights) on a "dead" frequency.
AM is AM - or, more correctly, medium-wave is medium-wave. It depends on the ionosphere, the weather, and the time of day. It's never been 100% reliable and never will be.
