These folks are truly unique--undertaking a broadcast "mission" with something in mind other than walking away from a job with a bundle of money in their pockets. Selling the spots, doing the games--they do it all, a task from which some people could learn a lesson in turn key, get-it-done broadcasting. As the quite well done story indicates, the emphasis is on the game and the broadcast product, not self promotion and "hey everyone look at me, me, me" tactics. A rarity these days.
There was another play-by-play team in East Texas in the 1960s. A guy named "Hub" Brando and his son out of Shreveport television did high school contract sports for the old KLUE in Longview. BTW, Hub's assistant, cable puller and all around helper, was his son, a then quite young Tim, known these days as Tim Brando of national sportscasting fame. A prime example of "you gotta start somewhere."
