Sports conflicts

It's that time of year again, sports play by play conflicts! ;D

Tonight the Phillies are on WYSP and WPHT, Flyers are on WIP-AM, and the Sixers are on WOGL. I don't get why the Phillies get the primary station when it's an exhibition game.

Because they are contracted to be on 94 on the FM side. They're gonna get priority over the Eagles once they start up too. I see what you're saying though. For an exhibition game since they have to be on FM, they should have been the one that went to 98. I'd preferably would have wanted the Flyers on 94 and the Sixers on 610 (they're gonna get their teeth kicked in tonight anyway so who cares how it'll sound).

I bet the Eagles will trump the Phillies on 94, definitely for regular season games. Maybe not for Eagles preseason games.

But it doesn't really make sense to have the Phillies on 2 stations on a night when the other two teams are playing, because that means knocking WOGL out of format for 3 hours.

I bet they want the Phillies on FM because this is only their second stereo broadcast from the home building and they want to get it right before Opening Day.

Generally, stations don't get to choose what station each sport will be on. The priority is usually dictated by the contracts between the station's ownership and each sports team.

They don't get to choose at the time, but they are obviously involved in the negotiation of those contracts.

Correct...and generally, the more important contracts get a higher priority. CBS probably used a two-signal commitment in order to win the Phillies contract, and I have no doubt that the Phillies contract was promised priority over Sixers broadcasts.

There is no chance in hell The Phillies are gonna bump the eagles off 94.1. At least not regular season games, but I would be surprised if even the preseason game were bumped to wogl. The Eagles contract which probably says they can't be bumped off, predates the Phillies. At most the Phillies contract says all games must be on FM, which means 98.1 WOGL is fine alternative once football season starts.
