Sports Coverage in Vermont

Being a sports fan, I am wondering what opinions all of you have on local sports coverage in Vermont. I think that the ESPN stations are doing well with local sports breaks and a call-in show on WCAT, and that Lee Kittell at DEV does a very good show, but wonder what everyone else's opinions are.

Joe

Joe, you better get a better radio. You're totally missing out on the world famous, best sport talk show in Vermont, Saturday mornings at 10 on WSYB with Jack Healy. Jack has been voted Vermont's best sportscaster of the year, constantly.. Jack can make play-by-play a "T-Ball" game some interesting. Worth tuning out 'Click and Clack" for. Also the Zone in Burlington / Plattsburgh / Randolph broadcasts "Lake Monsters" baseball and UVM Basketball which is very well done. Perhaps one day WSYB will be able to stream, since their 5000 watt daytime signal doesn't stray too far out of Rutland county.

I had a chance to hear Jack Healy several years go, when I produced the network feed for the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl on WTSV/WNHV. I agree, he truly is one of the best in Northern New England.

Perhaps he should send a tape to Larry Lucchino... he'd be a good candidate to replace Glenn Geffner :)

First, Jack Healey is an outstanding talent and always gives 110 percent to whatever he does.

Second, local high school sports can always be a draw for for a station, but maybe more effort can be utilized to get the Lake Monsters wider distribution?

Thirdly, the sucess of the UVM basketball team not too long ago gave a shot in the arm to college sports coverage, but the only real state-wide sporting event I can think of is the once-a-year Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl. Comments?

Jack Healey is a great sportscaster, and a good dude as well.

Back in the day when I worked for WVMT, I was producing a UVM hockey game. Still not familiar with the nuances of the WVMT board (which differed at the time from the other 3 consoles in the building), I wasn't aware that there was a setting on the board (which is how we recorded the audio, not with our digital system... :-\) that would broadcast elements being listened to in cue, which I what I was doing with the reel to isolate Jack's call of a goal-scoring play.

I had the studio volume down low so that I could listen to the cue speaker, and heard Jack Healey call me out on the air by my name telling me that I was feeding the cue audio back over the air.

The only person who sounds who can do a better Glenn Geffner than Glen Geffner himself, would be Vince Allo who has been along side with Jack Healy for years. Glenn sounds 'forced' where Vince sounds 'natural'.. Yet their deliveries are similar with the talent nod going to Allo and the big bucks and Sox connections going to Geffner. I do miss Trupe on the Sox broadcasts, even though I'm getting off topic.. Lot of polish there.. WAY BACK, WAY BACK....

I, too, miss Troop. "Waaaaay back.......and caught at the track." And his jokes - so horribly corny, yet somehow endearing. He and Castiglione had such great chemistry - its not the same with Glenn.

I still remember Troop's "Get on his back, folks" reference to Big Papi during the 2004 ALCS. Gotta say though....was pretty underwhelmed with Joe's call of the final play of the World Series. I'm sure he thought about what he was going to say for awhile...but it seemed like a bit of a letdown. Agree/disagree?

It's impossible to be letdown, because it was impossible to anticipate that the Sox would have ever won the Series. You can't plan something like that. Castig didn't oversell it, instead letting the fans absorb the moment themselves.

George Commo does an excellent job with Norwich Hockey on WDEV. The Vermont Frost Heaves Radio Network on WSNO & WJOY did a great job with their inaugural season. On the flip side around Vermont you can also some very poorly done local sports broadcasts. I've heard numerous games on the Lake Champlain Group ESPN stations with horrendus cell phone audio. I agree Healy is a class act.

Since we're all having a positive "Jack-fest" and rightfully deserving of those great honors, here's the million dollar question.. Why is he only on 2 of the 5 stations in the Pamal-Rutland group ? Come on, who else would you rather hear doing a bona-fide well thought out and relevant sportscast ?

I think DEV is the Best - I mean Ken Squier - come on - great sports show - and Lee Kittell - have you heard the guests that he gets? DEV is where it's at!!!!!

No offense to any one (especially Mr. Commo), but Jack is the best...nothing better than the classic MSJ/Rutland games...only Healey can make a high school girls mid-season non league game sound like the NBA finals. JUst another UNDER-USED asset for Gilligan crew. Why would you take an ICON like Mr. Healey and keep him on the only stations that don't reach beyond Rutland County? Its like the Bear and the Professor are trying to keep him down...afraid he might stray Mr. Marbles?

Can't wait to hear UVM Hockey this year. No doubt another award winning year for the Great One!

To me, Healy and Commo are the two best in the area hands down. Both are not only very good at what they do, but they are very classy guys as well.

Jack and George are no doubt the best, in that order, but keep an eye on the new kid on the block Dave Kane. He does UVM basketball and the Lake Monsters. Big time voice and much like Jack, very prepared.

Agreed on Jack and George. As for Dave Koehn, I've worked with him, and not only is he a talented guy with great pipes; he, too, is a total class act as well.
