Sports Hub is Holding Auditions for a Weekend Host

98.5 is holding open tryouts for a weekend host over the next month or so.

Seems like it is mostly a way to hold a bunch of station events at bars, but the winner will get paid ($26/hour and a CSB scholarship). Also, I think it is a network promotion as a CBS sports station in Pittsburgh is doing it.

Surprised WEEI has never done this promotion. It has had "celebrity callers" on weekends before. A guy named Everett or something who called D&C. Plus, Dakota bought time on 1510.

...and radio gets dumbed down another notch. It's one thing to be a "celebrity caller" (who came up with that moniker, anyhow?), who calls at the same time every day and endlessly discusses their one and only pet topic until the producers get told not to take his calls anymore, and quite another thing to be hosting a radio program on a regular basis where a variety of topics must be discussed in a manner that sustains both ratings and sales.

We have, thank goodness, gone way beyond "all radio hosts must sound like announcers." But it is patently untrue that "anyone can do radio." Heck, this board takes decades-long veteran hosts to the woodshed on a regular basis. Amateurs would be skewered within seconds.

wfan in new york did this a few years ago!!

In response to dumber than a box of hair, I wasn't clear. WEEI had a celebrity caller (maybe two) hosting a weekend show for a brief time a few years ago. It was a guy who regularly called D&C.

No, it was a guy named Everett. He used to call in to D&C to talk about issues concerning race. It was awful radio. Dakota bought time at 1510 the Zone to do a morning show.
