Sports in HD

I notice that many sports teams still only show a select number of their telecasts in HD on outlets such as the Fox Sports regional channels. Why is this? Does it really cost that much more to broadcast in HD? ESPNHD has been around for about 6 years now, so I don't see why every game can't be shown in HD nowadays.

Usually, the home games on regional FSN stations are HD, and most away games are SD. Cost is a factor.

ESPN is national...and has a boatload of $$$$$$ thanks to fees averaging $3 per subscriber, the highest in the industry. There are several FSN regional networks, and they take in much less and have to deal with smaller budgets.

As the cost of HD equipment and transmission mediums decrease...there will be more sports in HD.

ESPN had a number of college basketball games in sd only this past season. The Georgetown-UConn game comes to mind.

It takes on the order of a couple million dollars to build out a single HD truck. For FSN it's a very cost-prohibitive thing. Most of these little Div. I-AA or Div. II schools are just happy to have their athletic programs on TV, so at this point it's probably no real loss for FSN.
