Sports on Local News

I've been noticing a recent trend with sports anchors and reporters crossing over to news where they are handling both duties at the same time. A good example is Channel 3 where Jim Donovan is is the Sports Director and 7PM news co-anchor, and John Anderson is weekend news and sports anchor.

Other recent anchor hires have extensive sports backgrounds - Chris Flanagan on Channel 5 and newly hired George Smith on Channel 19/43. Don't forget Brian Duffy, a longtime anchor at 19/43 who went from sports to news.

Could more TV newsrooms be moving in a direction where they have anchors and reporters handling news and sports at the same time? It could happen, but who knows when.

I believe the word you're looking for is multitasking. Management types love it. Just ask, and they'll tell you. ;D

I would say signs point to yes.. it's cheaper for them. I see this down here in Columbus from time to time... especially around vacation time.. anchors will pull double duty.. or you'll see the sports guy 'co host' with one of the anchors.

I didn't initially like seeing Jim Donovan doing anything other than sports, but it's grown on me.

It's not that new of a phenomenon.

Lou Maglio was a "utility man" on channel 5 in the '80s, doing news and sports reporting, and he's carried it over to Fox 8, as he's John Telich's main sub at the sports desk during the week.

Jim Donovan could very well become the main news anchor on channel 3 before too long, should a big national gig come 'a calling for Russ Mitchell.

I'm surprised there is still a sports segment on the local news. They get about 4 minutes during the evening news and even that is shrinking.

I would think he'd be content staying in sports. It's a much easier gig, and after his health problems over the past few years, I doubt he really wants to push it.
