"Sports Radio Hosts" Get Pub in AP Article About Gates Arrest

In an article this morning revolving around the suspicious arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates by a white police officer, the Associated Press writes:

"... there was plenty of blame being spread around by the public, through talk shows, blogs, newspaper online forums and watercooler chats. Even the hosts of a sports radio show in Boston spent much of Wednesday morning faulting Gates."

Yet the article fails to mention or identify the "sports radio show hosts" in question or even quote them!

Probably were hosts on WWZN... ::)

As expected, Michael Holley defended Gates at the crossover. He's much more of a racist than D or C ever thought of being. But he gets away with it.

I'm SHOCKED, shocked I tell you that D&C were talking about this issue instead of the Red Sox dropping five in a row. Actually, maybe some topics are better left alone--like the Sox losing five in a row. Too depressing for first thing in the morning. ;D

Drudge is linking to WEEI's page where the audio of the interview can be found.

I expect Entercom to come out with a press release tomorrow crowing, 'WEEI.com Squashes all Other Boston Media Web Sites...Combined!'

Their ads do say that they discuss "water cooler topics", etc. They certainly do get into the news. I do
remember one particular weekend about 8 yrs ago when I woke up, clock radio set to WEEI, and was
expecting them to be talking about Red Sox-Yankees. Instead, they said "we're now going back to
ABC news; a plane has crashed into the World Trade Center..."*
THAT morning sports was definitely on the back burner (as it was for a couple wks to follow)

*--that particular day I did watch the coverage on TV though it was on a portable b&w with no cable,
as my cable had been out for a few days--line accidentally cut by a city crew installing a sidewalk.
It did get restored a few hrs later.
A couple days before 9/11 there was a story on TV about some kind of weird monkey and I thought,
slow news day. A couple days later, no more slow news days...and I also remember on 9/11 grabbing
lunch at the Danvers Pizzeria Uno--TVs were broadcasting the event coverage--and I opened my
Herald to see what the big story was. In that edition, put out mere hours before the attacks,
the big story was, IIRC, "will Michael Jordan return to play?"

The nature of water cooler talk of course is give the people what they want, no different than the
whole Michael Jackson deal. People WANT to tune in and watch, or listen to, that stuff, and as soon
as interest cools, the subject changes.

D&C don't discuss anything. They rant, then when someone stupid enough to attempt to engage them in debate, they sneeringly mock and yell at that person.

I'm looking forward to WBZ-FM's debut so there will be an alternative. I've been listening to Jeff Santos on WWZN but his show is boring so I tune out quite a bit--and this is coming from someone pretty far to the left. I haven't ever listened to Toucher and Rich so I don't know what kind of show they do. Do you people think they would have discussed the Gates kerfuffle, sports or both? Curious...

Al, I think you will see a very different type of show from T&R than you will from D&C. T&R do more, what I refer to as "frat boy radio". I believe they call it "guy radio". They will incorporate some sports as they do now ("drunken recaps", interviews with Bruins players) but it will be far more "entertainment" than sports or even water cooler talk.

Think more along the lines of O&A. ::)

Callahan does tend to get too personal and mean spirited, but they do let opposing viewpoints on. Jermaine and Everett are regular callers, both one-trick ponies. When either one calls you know exactly what they're going to say, but they let them come on the air.

This morning they let that total dipstick, Steve from Fall River go to the head of the line because he disagreed with them. As I've posted many times before, 'EEI could improve its quality exponentially, by just doing a better job of screening callers.

Unfortunately for people seeking a respite from Callahan's ranting and yelling at callers, Fred from T&R seemed obsessed with Gates. He spent most of the first hour and about 10 minutes with a guest in the third hour going on about the case. <Click>

T&R will be more like O&A with lots of guests and friends of the show, but with more local focus and more bits. The new Crash Clarke sports updates are terrible, though. Pre-taped and way over the top.
