Sports Radio in Philly

Do you think that Philly could support a second all-sports station?

WIP does a fairly good job, although sometimes I get the feeling they are just coasting. If it's true that competition forces businesses to improve their product, that would suggest that WIP would become a better radio station if another viable and compelling sports station were in the market.

Heaven knows that with the myriad of professional and college teams in the region there is enough sports in this area to drive programming on two sports stations. The question is, would it be a viable business move for a station to break into sports radio?

I think an ESPN radio station with a good range and not ALL ESPN programming would do excellent.

I would keep Mike and Mike

Drop Colin Cowherd and take on Local talk.

Keep Dan Patrick and the SportsBash with Eric Kasilias

His show ends at I think 7 I would go with local talk from 7 through the overnight.

It could put some dents in WIP

There's enough sporstalk already. There's more happening in the world but Philly has it's One dimensional blowhards.

If done right, another sports station would certainly challenge WIP, and expose the hosts on WIP for their general lack of knowledge about sports. I will admit, Gargano knows his stuff. However, I challenge Eskin to name the eleven teams in the Big Ten.

As do I, but I dont like New York sports and I can't take listening to Sid for 3 hours. And after awhile you get tired of listening to Yankee talk. An ESPN station that could actually reach further than a mile from the stations location would be real nice. But will ESPN do that to a station that is supossedly "Philly's real sports station"?

Yeah I never really got that. the Philly's real sports station bit.

Our ESPN affiliate here in CT 1410 and I think 15 somethin creeps in out of NYC every now and then are great during the DAY cant go real well at night. Thats why I would keep most of ESPN's big guns on the philly station during the day and just mix in local talk instead of the less desirable shows. There is definitly room in the market for a competitor to IP.
Edited by SCRHack on 07/14/05 05:22 PM.

Does anyone know (Tripp?) what kind of contract 920 might have that if a full market Philadelphia station wanted to go with ESPN they would have to relinquish the programming? Also, what about WNPV, that's ESPN 7pm to 5am weekdays & much of the weekends? IF that happened, would 920 go to Fox or SN?
