Sports Radio Wars

Being out of market, I haven't heard much about the sports radio wars lately....what's the latest on the Ticket and BMP's new ESPN station (1270am?) Who's on now and how do they sound? Can I listen online?

As far as sports radio in SA goes, Mike Taylor has the best show BY FAR. 1250 has way more local programming, but Chris Duel's show is amateur. Thompson's are above average and better than Duel for sure. Paul Alexander has the best show on that station and it's a shame BMP was stupid enough to put him up against Rome. That just boggles the mind, as does the fact that they have no website yet (5 months and counting). In any case though, Ticket760's afternoon show just annihilates 1250. Outside of Jim Rome and STSA, I would say everything else is a toss-up between the two.

When comparing the two stations, I actually give Ticket a slight edge (not ratings-wise just personal preference) even though they have fewer local shows.

I think with the right amount of promotion, 1250 could easily overtake the Ticket...especially if the rumors about Mike Taylor leaving come true. I heard he has another offer in a bigger market and CC has yet to negotiate a new contract with him. If CC stays true to the Cheap Channel name and let's Taylor walk (like they did the Thompson Bros. on WOAI last summer), I fear their listeners will finally give up on the station after the revolving door of hosts they've had the past couple of years.

I think that the best sports show on our radio is the Sports Grind on KTKR 760 AM. I also feel that Duel's show is amateur. I didn't care much for his show during the '90s on WOAI with that nasally voiced whiner sidekick, or his juvenile, middle school, locker room stunt humor on KTSA with his long gone sidekick Ruben (who disappeared shortly after pulling that prank call on Rikki Ware). I still feel that Duel had a part in the jettisoning of Carl W from KTSA with that infamous prematurely leaked email. I'll also be glad to see M Taylor go somewhere else. He never seemed to fit in. One could just hear it in his voice that he didn't really care about the Spurs and was only here as long as the $$$ held out. If CC really wanted to make $$$ and sell commercials instead of station promos and PSAs they would put the Sports Grind up against the amateur hour down the dial. The guys on the Sports Grind sound a lot more sincere, personable, knowledgeable and down to earth than someone attempting to appeal to more affluent listeners hoping to lure more high dollar sponsors. And I'm sure CC isn't paying the guys on the Sports Grind anywhere near what they are paying M Taylor, even with their salaries combined!

The last I heard from the station, their website was to be up and running by the end of
July. This was in early June and the site was supposed to be up and running by then.
Another delay?

Never seemed to fit in? Last I heard his ratings were fantastic... Kinda hard to NOT fit in and pull numbers at the same time.

BTW, Sports Grind is bad radio.

There aren't any radio wars going on... if there are it's just made up stuff from Chris Duel... As far as Mike Taylor goes, he's pretty much got it wrapped up as far as being the best radio sports guy on SA's airwaves. The Grind is a really good show. Calvin and the guys are great and they have a great deal of sports knowledge.

IMO

Paying them??? Puh-lease. The only reason those guys are on the air is because they paid their way on. They get inventory to sell on their own and CC gets a few more bucks for an hour than what they were getting by running Fox Sports Radio.

It's ALL about the money. Don't think it has anything to do with anything else.

Everyone seems to forget the Thompson Twins, (yea I know they're not twins), started out by buying their way on 760. Seems to have been a good move for them.

Yeah but the Thompsons were good. I don't entirely hate the Sports Grind, but more often than not I find it drab and dull. That guy Calvin has zero energy, personality, it-factor, anything. Whatever it is, he doesn't have it.

I'd call it smart counter-programming. Paul Alexander is the opposite of Jim Rome, a throwback, anti-catchphrase kind of guy.

Wow, another book, another NO SHOW for ESPN..... Great numbers for STSA. Wonder how long they spend money on a sinking ship at ESPN?

I wonder what type of format BMP will throw at that station when they tire of its lack of performance? Maybe it could be the new KTFM-AM? That freq was much more useful when it was ZROCK way back in the late '80s.
People buy their way onto radio? What a novel concept! Any moron with money can buy their own radio program and then we can sit here and criticize it because we know everything and could a much better act. Which aisle at Walmart does one find 'radio program'?
