OK, I know we get WFAN from NYC and WEEI (slightly in the northeast) from Boston but why don't our local sports stations (WPOP, WINE, WAVS) ever garner ratings?

I think it's the lack of local sports. Opinions? ????

It's not the lack of sports. You just answered your own question at the top of your post. The sports talk stations we have are knockoffs. Most places in Connecticut, WFAN comes in loud and clear and they have a 20-plus year track record. WPOP, WINE and WAVZ do not have the coverage in terms of power that WFAN has to make a difference.

With the ecxeption of WTIC, can't the same be applied to news? Especially now that WELI doesn't have a local news department.
WCBS and WINS come in loud and clear across a good part of Connecticut, and WBZ is pretty clear in the east.

I don't think it's just power, but content as well. Look at WEPN in NYC. It has 50kw but can't compete with WFAN because WFAN is localized for the NY/CT fan. WEPN, the ESPN affiliate, has to cover all sports/all teams and trails dismally in the ratings.

WPOP with 5kw has generally a much better signal locally, but can't compete with WFAN from 100 miles away because WFAN is covering the teams a lot of CT people follow. WPOP, the local ESPN outlet, is in the same boat as WEPN.

WCBS and WINS along with WBZ are ALL news stations just like WFAN is ALL Sports. With the exception of WPOP in Hartford back in the '70's and '80's, a format like that requires manpower and resources that a major broadcast group would not devote to a state like Connecticut. As big of a company that CBS is, they will not convert WTIC to ALL news unless the demand and the dollars were there.

I don't believe it's an issue of not enough news happening in Connecticut; It's one of resources. All news is the most expensive radio format to produce-- particularly if you want to do it well. I just don't think anyone would be willing to dedicate the resources to an all news operation in Hartford. However if they did, I could guarantee you that there would be enough stories to fill the time.

What if Entercom had a station in Hartford with WEEI on it. How would it do ratings wise? It wouldn't be a bad thing if they took over WPOP.

Yes it would. Not that I care (because I'm a Yankees fan), I don't think the Redsox fans would be too happy about the games moving from a 50KW powerhouse to a 5KWer. (Although I would be extremely happy if the Yankees wound up on the 50KW powerhouse ;D)

No need for that. We already get the Yankees (A.L. Wild Card...Yay?) on a 50,000-watter in WCBS-AM. Besides, how would John Sterling sound with all the IBOC hash when he proclaims "Yankees WIN!..." :p

Im not saying take the Red Sox off WTIC 1080. Just have WEEI sports talk on 1410 instead.

Thats true the Yankees have a contract with WPOP. I thought Yankees games could be moved or if the station flipped formats they don't have to keep the team they have been broadcasting anymore.

Buckley has a relationship with the Yankees since their games are on WWCO in Waterbury. Let WDRC carry the Yankees and flip WPOP to a WEEI affiliate. But what do you fill the time with on WPOP while the Red Sox games are on? Mets?

Strange as a 1.0 12+ average rating may seem, it's possible that WPOP's management could be content with its status. It costs relatively little, is the only Hartford all-sports outlet, gives ESPN a presence in its backyard and probably gets some desirable demos. WFAN's performance in Hartford may not do much for the CBS Radio bottom line, but that along with 1410's own signal nulls do limit WPOP's potential.

WAVZ's frequent format flips, in addition to being even closer to WFAN, make a ratings showing a real challenge. That landfill tower location may have cut their signal, too. With all the changes at 1300, the ESPN branding can't hurt!

WINE has its own signal limitations, covering the northern half of the market (New Milford, Brookfield, etc.)better than much of Danbury itself. How do you do any night games - important income on a sports station - when you power down to 9 watts at best?

That would work, why not put the Yanks on WDRC-AM. As for what to fill the time with when Red Sox are on replace it with ESPN Radio.

Um, because WDRC AM's signal sucks at night. I can not get a decent listenable signal of any of the 4 stations at night here in Southington. I get a faint signal from WSNG 610 out of Torrington, but they're signal is now shot to hell ever since WIP in Philly flipped on the IBOC at night. And most nights while I can hear WDRC 1360 it is a constant battle with WNJC from Washington Township, New Jersey. (AM signals at night - gotta love them. My good friend George Brusstar says WDRC is like a local at night down in Audubon, Pennsylvania (not far from Philly) with no sign of WNJC's 800 watt nite signal which can be heard in the Philly area on the stronger day signal).

I have no problems receiving WPOP day or night. Leave the Yankees there unless an FMer picks them up or if an English Language Broadcaster buys WLAT 910 and they put the games there.

Here in New Britain's south end, I get a decent signal of WDRC-AM at night, but it's VERY directional. Turn my AM antenna ever so slightly and a station from Binghamton, NY starts to interfere. Turn it some more and I won't get WDRC-AM at all. I don't get WSNG-AM 610 here. Ever. WWCO-AM 1240 of Waterbury is iffy during the day. Lastly, WMMW-AM 1470 of Meriden barely leaves the city limits or Berlin's south end. I guess WPOP-AM was smart by placing their transmitter in Newington. Lastly, the Yankees have been on WDRC-AM 1360 before. I believe it was around the time they won the 1996 World Series. (I can check my audio tapes for this.)

GO YANKEES! ;D
