Sports Radio

The Sports Radio leader here is KILT AM 610 which has dropped in the ratings from 2.4 down to 1.6 in Feb-12, even with Rockets games on now.

Number 2 = KBME AM 790 - dropped from 1.3 to 0.8.

Number 3 = KFNC FM 97.5 with ESPN - remained stable at 0.8.
(Cumulus filed bankruptcy for this station a few months ago)

Number 4 = KGOW AM 1560 had been at 0.2, but recently slipped to 0.1, almost off the radar screen.

It’s hard to figure how these folks are keeping the lights on, especially 1560 The Game.

What happened and what’s going to happen . . .

Football season is over. There's no buzz about the Rockets. Baseball season has yet to start. Winter doldrums.

The stations keep the lights on by reaching the rather hard-to-get 25-54 male demographic in a radio world that heavily targets females.

KGOW has descended into complete irrelevance. Despite a lot of ego/attitude/bragging/chest thumping in its early days, the station has been a failure. When Gow is tired of losing money, Yahoo Sports Radio will be sold (again) and 1560 will be put on the block to become something else.

From what I hear on the street, Yahoo! Sports Radio is making Gow a ton of money. I don't know what the local billing is like, but the network is said to be doing very well.

I always enjoy seeing people comment on a stations financial status. Unless you work in their business office, you really have no idea how much they're actually billing. I have seen many stations with virtually no rating bring in enough money to turn a profit. Vice versa, I know a station right now that pulled in a 40 share and almost everything on it is barter.

I have had meetings with David Gow on multiple occasions and from what I can tell, he is a very sharp businessman. He obviously has wealth and he *probably* didn't acquire it by making bad decisions. I would assume that he is making at least some profit, or he would have walked away by now.

I listen to Yahoo Sports Radio at night.

The David Nuno show isn't bad and I enjoy John Harris.

Do any of the Houston stations do a hybrid of Sports/Guy talk like The Ticket in Dallas does?
