Sports remotes

Any ideas on the best compressor/limiter/levelers for keeping consistent levels? This would be post codec (Comrex/TieLine) in the chain. Before I buy something new, I'd like to get some suggestions.

Anybody using processing boxes at the remote site since some announcers only think or know about headphone levels? Thanks.

I'm going to send out a dbx 266xl in the kit this year... I'm putting together a remote kit in a gator case, will mount the 266, set it up and put a mesh cover over the controls to keep prying fingers away.

Last year was our first year using audiocompass exclusively, I've now tweaked all the bugs out and have it working well. It's clean enough that I was running the audio level way down, 20+ db below full scale, which worked well until the guys at the game decided they want to see more lights lighting up, then by the end of the game they're running into clipping the whole time...I'm going to put the output of their mixer into the 266 then to a usb audio interface mounted in the case.

We do a fair amount of pots remotes, occasionally cell phone. One stadium we visit in post season HS FB doesn't have any wired connections (no phone, no internet), so we have to use cell.

Use an Orban 424 to control levels (I know--stereo box--one line to left, one to right--it can be set independent) & an ART EQ to sweeten incoming phone audio.

There are tons of options out there really. The other ones suggested are great options. One other thought would be to get a compellor off FleaBay. If you only need one channel, I've seen used ones go for about 50 dollars. Considering how wide of a range they'll handle, that might be the best option a guy could use.

Would be nice to have a simple solution to control levels ahead of the codec--since digital is so unforgiving. But, unless you have a semi-permanent remote location this is impractical--too many boxes to carry & hook up wrong. Only easy solution I can see (unless a compressor is built into the codec) is to set levels way low to give sports guys lots of headroom. Then compensate for varying levels at the studio.

Myself I really like an Aphex Compellor before any codec. Levels the audio nicely, without any artifacts for the codec to choke on.
It's a nice smooth solution.

I've been pre-processing my stadium audio before it hits the ISDN/Bluebox/Access for several years. Best way is to use a mixer with inserts on the stereo output (that rules out the smaller Mackie's though there are work-arounds). It tightens up the crowd, keeps screaming announcers under control and overall makes the game sound better. I keep a permanent install at the home stadium during football season which this year gets a flea bay found Compellor.

Aphex made a low cost compressor, the 108 I think. While out of production it is very light weight and works well in a location kit which is what I use in mine.

Off topic, I have a pair of the Sennheiser 280 sportscaster headsets available in good condition. PM for details.

I'll second the recommendation for the RDL modules. I built a remote kit for one of my stations and placed one between the front end mixer and the Tieline. Works great. I like them because they can be placed out of the way and are more tamper resistant than rackmount gear.

I've tried putting a dbx 166xl into the field but had too many problems with folks tweaking it. The mesh protectors help some but people still made adjustments.
