sports scripts

Why is it always "Diamondbacks BLANK Other Team"? Worst script possible.

Why can't you ever do "Coyotes 'EFF' Other Team"? That would be cool. And legally permissible. And more hip to younger demographic. I'm just sayin'....

How about the word Paul Calvisi uses for every team in the valley when they're winning: "wacky." :p

Right now, you got the "wacky" Coyotes winning their first division title in what is quite possibly their last season in Glendale, or you have the "wacky" Suns in their last season with Steve Nash. Finally, there's the "wacky" Diamondbacks in their first season where they're actually favored to make it to the World Series.

I guess this town is so used to having loser sports teams that anytime a team wins, sports announcers refer to it as "wacky"! ::)

Maybe because they don't want to sound dumber than they already do. ::)

While it is true the Valley has been going through a poor sports cycle these past few years you don't have to go back very far to find there is a history of winning and great fan support. The Suns at one time were competitive. The Sun Devils have gone to two Rose Bowls and the baseball and softball teams have won national championships if memory serves. The D'Backs won the World Series a decade ago but then were effectively dismantled. And even the Cards had a great run at the Super Bowl several years ago.

The Coyotes have had lots of problems unique to them but have had some great, if all too brief, moments. Hopefully this year they can achieve what has eluded them for so long. They are an exciting team to watch especially when you consider they are mostly journeymen players.

I don't listen to sports talk on radio or TV but the term "wacky" is usually plastered about on entertainers such as The Three Stooges and The Marx Brothers and defines a genre of comedy. If a Valley sportscaster is using this term to identify local sports teams he clearly does not understand the meaning of the word and is a slap in the face to every sports team in the country save possibly The Harlem Globetrotters.

UMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, what??!!! Don't even try to say this town has Sports winners!!! SERIOUSLY?! Yes, the Dbacks won the World Series...over 10 years ago. And yes, the Cards went to the Super Bowl 3 years ago. But the Suns have NEVER won in 40 years. And the Coyotes could win...but for most of us who live here now and are from the Midwest...Chicago, Detroit, etc etc...WE KNOW about losing teams...and being longtime suffering fans. And Phoenix ain't any different!!!

We were voted #6 in Top 10 Most Losingest Sports Cities...and here's what it says:

1 championship in 82 years

Baseball’s Diamondbacks began playing in 1998, and clinched the World Series in 2001. Despite that quick success, they’re the only Phoenix team to see postseason glory. The Suns have a pair of conference titles, but no championships; the Cardinals had two championships, but while they were based in Chicago; and the Coyotes have never achieved any playoff success.

Did you SERIOUSLY source askmen.com? :D

Phoenix is much different than the ultra-rich winning championship cities like New York, Los Angeles, or Boston. But it doesn't mean we don't have WINNING teams, with decent records and post-season opportunities.

A few corrections:

1. A good sports town means the teams have support from fans, local businesses, local government and the media. It doesn't mean they take home championships. Toronto fills their stadium every single home game (as do a bunch of others) but the last time the Leafs won a Stanley Cup was 1967. The Cubs haven't won a Series since 1908 yet remain first in the hearts of their fans.

2. There are more sports teams in Phoenix than the professional variety. For years and years there was high school and ASU (and some junior colleges) and they were supported very well. Even the old minor league RoadRunners drew a consistent 3,500 people per regular season game and filled the Coliseum during the holidays and playoffs.

3. If there is a failing in this town regarding team support it falls largely on the media and the people who run the teams. The Bidwells made a mess of the Cards when they came to town but the media, and fans, supported them regardless. The D'backs basically destroyed the World Series team a year later and they are just now beginning to win again. The Coyotes have been a textbook case of mismanagement right from the start and the incredibly stupid decision to locate the arena in the far west Valley was the worst decision of all. If the Coyotes go deep into the playoffs they will capture the attention of the casual fan. There are thousands of youth hockey players putting on the skates these days that never would have been exposed to hockey except for the Coyotes.

4. I don't know the exact numbers but using the old saw that "everybody in Phoenix came from somewhere else" is largely BS. At least as far as youth and young adults are concerned. Most of us are from right here. All a team has to do is put a decent product on the field and they will be supported - just like any other city. Phoenix hasn't had the past century to build strong sports alliances, but it will. One thing that will always be different in Phoenix though is the competition from other sports and non-sports because of the weather. There is simply more to do here on a year-round basis than attend games.

Proof that this site is moronic. Major-league sports in Phoenix has only existed since 1968 - 44 years, not 82. Still not great, but not a bald-faced lie like this site is perpetrating.

Saying that Indy has one championship in 65 years is another lie. There are only two big-league teams in Indy, the first (Pacers) only having existed since 1967 in the ABA - and they don't even count the Pacers' three titles in that league. And can we please count the 5 NCAA Tournament championships earned by Indiana University, which despite being 50 miles away and not a pro team, is part of the Indianapolis sports market?

This site is BS from the word "Go." Nothing to see here. Move on.

landtuna, I responded to the fact that you said this isn't a losing sports town. It is a losing sports town. PERIOD. That's all I was saying.

Nobody is disagreeing with you that there's heart & soul here, or possibility, or fan attendance, or any of those things.

And don't put words in my mouth that you think I said nobody is from Phoenix...I didn't say that. I said for most of us that live here now that are from the Midwest...meaning the people who live here now that are from the Midwest. These particular people know losing sports teams...the Cubs, the Lions, etc, etc. And Phoenix is just the same as these cities...with losing sports teams.

I didn't say anything about fans, or dedication, or anything...you're saying that. You also brought up non-professional sports, when no one referred to that.

And KLL...who cares where anyone gets anything from on the web...it's all a bunch of BS!!!

As KeithE4 has pointed out the total time Phoenix has had a professional sports team is 44 years (1968 Suns), not 82.

But more importantly, teams don't "lose" because they don't finish first. This isn't an auto race where only the first finisher is a winner. You can have a very successful history and never reach that elusive #1 position.

Yup....I blew it. Misread your sentence. Sorry.

And there is where I think you are wrong. The Cubs and Lions are perfect examples of futility and a lot of that seems to endear those teams to its fans. In most cities an unproductive team is not supported very well and that is true in Phoenix. Given the cost of a ticket to a major sporting event these days no one wants to see a perpetual loser. And Phoenix residents have many options for their weekend time, unlike many other places. I don't see the same loser mentality in Phoenix that exists in Chicago towards the Cubs or Detroit towards the Lions for instance. I think that mentality is what identifies a loser. When you go to a game and expect the team to lose is when you have a problem. The difference between a Chicago is that while the Cubs still lose people still fill the bleachers. That isn't as likely to happen here.

The web is no more BS than a cafeteria full of your co-workers each having an opinion. Some you might agree with and some you won't. But to toss it all out and describe it as a bunch of BS is also not true.

KeithE4, guess what?! We're all moronic, sitting here on this board, gossiping and arguing about such subjective things!!! :p

But most of us at least try to get our facts straight. This site makes no attempt to do so.

When I quoted "askmen" I knew it was kind of a silly website, but the only reason I knew about them naming Phoenix in their Top 10 Losingest is because I heard it on our wonderful TV stations a few years back. I kind of quoted them as a joke...but I should have known better, because the art of sarcasm & JOKING is completely lost in the written typed word. I guess I should have put a smiley face next to it.

I'm female, and I don't pretend to have the same deep sports knowledge as many men do. So, maybe askmen was using the 82 years in terms of the Cardinals organization before they were in AZ? Don't know; sorry I posted that...but regardless of 82 years or 44 years or 18, 244 years...we still only have 1 championship.

And, landtuna, if you think sitting in a cafeteria with your co-workers, that you know and can see with your eyes is the same thing as talking to people anonymously on the web, more power to you...to each his own. To me, the virtual world is not the same as the real world.

I was just teasing about the sourcing askmen.com. It's just a little funny, that's all. :)

Whether or not you want to drink the Arizona sports Hatorade is all up to you. Everybody has a bias when it comes to sports. I just don't think good sports is purely measured by championship rings. No worries...
