Sports Squawk

WOW...I really feel alone.

Apparently I'm the only one who enjoys Schopp. I think his off-handed comments are quite funny. To be honest, and nothing against bulldog, but I am much more likely to listen to that show when Mike is on (alone or with Chris) than I am when he's not on.

I don't quite get all the hate or discontentment with his work.

Also, I don't know why anyone would want to do sports talk. Sometimes there's just nothing interesting in the niche to fill a show with.

I'm pretty much with you. I used to hate him, about 5 years ago or more, when he really hated the Bills, with Donahoe, and just totally kissed the Sabres butts............Now, I think that he's fair towards both teams.

I listen to Brad a lot more these days, but when I do catch these guy, and when Greg Bauch is in the mix, they can really get me laughing.

That's all I want most of the time - to be entertained and laugh. I don't need all kinds of sports breakdowns (unless it after a Bills game or a Sabres playoff game)

From today's Buffalo News:

Fan tunes out radio voices

I am a sports fan and have listened to WGR-AM on and off for a few years. I now find all the sportscasters boring, arrogant and hockey nuts. The best and finest tournament in sports is the NCAA basketball tournament, which rarely received mention by this group. They are so enamored by the Sabres, Pegula and naturally they are the broadcaster of Sabre games, that all other sports are very minor.

Schopp—arrogant. Bulldog —a real hockey puck. Simon and Jeremy—children at play. What happened to Empire Sports? I don’t listen anymore and they won’t miss me and I don’t miss them.

Nick Mendola just played an open on WECK 1230-AM with audio of Jim Brinson. A blast from the past!

I miss Brinson. His phony announcer voice was corny, but he was a good guy and always professional. And a lot better tennis player than Schopp. :)

Brinson is a very good athlete. Great set of pipes too.

Maybe Brad can have him sit in sometime during his show or Nick's show if Jimmy B ever comes back to visit WNY in the future.

Heads up..... WGR is doing another "draft" tomorrow afternoon.

Are the dog days of summer here already? It's not even Father's Day yet!

I'll be listening to Shredd & Ragan.

How did "the draft" go? Was the GR crew able to finish the entire thing or did the Drew Stafford contract signing interrupt their fun?

It's been lots and lots and lots of Sabres talk this summer and very little about the Bills with Schopp and Bulldog.

Is that because of the enthusiasm that Terry Pegula has brought to town or is it because the Bills are that boring and bland and, coupled with the NFL lockout, there simply isn't a lot of excitement for football this offseason?

Or is it ultimately because one of the hosts has made it perfectly obvious that he despises the NFL?

WGR morning show guys were talking about a big staff meeting tomorrow morning with the return of Andy Roth to the Entercom offices.

You don't think... naw.... could it?

The return of Riter to WGR?

I'd be stunned. Then again, I was blown away when WGR hired Mike Schopp from WNSA and put him WITH Chuck Dickerson years ago.

Never say never in this business.

My former colleagues in the sales field are NOT talking. Two guys from Entercom didn't answer my calls a few minutes ago to their cell phones and the guy I know at Citadel said "that's the rumor" about Brad leaving WECK but then said he had to hang up because he was waiting on a call about this meeting tomorrow morning involving the Entercom guys at 'GR.

Maybe they are going to shuffle the deck and move Jeremy White to PM drive and let Schopp take over 10 am to noon solo?

Just one thought, I'm sure others have theories to share as well.
