Sports stations other than WEEI, 985

I find myself searching the dial for something else other than 985 or WEEI. Have you heard any other sports shows out there?

WIP in Philadelphia is actually pretty good. They're live and local most of the time, and their hosts are entertaining. They are hyperlocal to Philly, and if you aren't familiar with their sports landscape it may come off as boring, but they serve their audience well. The Fan in Pittsburgh also shows some promise. They're a new FM sports talker, but they get it. It's no surprise that both of these stations are owned by CBS, who also own WFAN and the Sports Hub. The company knows how to do sports talk.

WEEI seemed like they were trying to make improvements. They shortened their commercial breaks and tried to be more business-like. They dropped the "Headlines" segment on the D&C show, I assume to concentrate more on sports. Just when you think they're really trying, bang, Larry Johnson pops up as a co-host on the Big Show and you're hearing 10 minute speeches from Danny from Quincy or Steve from Fall River. Their behavior is baffling at times.

I turned on WEEI on either Saturday or Sunday morning because the Hub was national and talking about NASCAR. It was Buckley's baseball show and they were having a good discussion... then they go to the calls. "Frank from Gloucester, you're on the baseball sh..." CLICK!

I agree with the short-lived changes at WEEI that were mentioned above. Too bad, they had some good things going there. I will not listen to Mustard and Johnson under any circumstance. Similarly, I avoid D&C. I'm anxious to see how they will screw up the football show this fall.

If you have a smartphone, the Yahoo Radio app gives you a good selection of sports talk radio, as does iTunes radio. If you are willing to pay and love football, Sirius' NFL Radio is must listen.

I heard a few different stations with sports over the weekend. WATD 95.9FM, WTKK 96.9 WBNW 1120am and WXBR 1460am WGAM 900 in NH.

Does 1510 still have sports shows?

That may be the most annoying thing about WEEI. It's easy enough to avoid a mess like the Mustard and Johnson show or to tune out the Big Show if you can't stand that day's co-host(LJ, Butch, et al), but these callers come out of nowhere. Even that would be okay if they crapped all over them and blew them up. Most of the time, however, they end up giving someone like Steve from Fall River a 50,000 watt forum to make a 10 minute speech and then finally blow him up. Sometimes calls from crazies can be entertaining, but 'EEI's so-called "Celebrity Callers" are always singing the same song.
Danny from Quincy---I said such and such four years ago and I was right
Steve from Fall River--Pats/Red Sox management is incompetent and cheap
Jack from Lynn--always some story blowing his own horn
Carmine from Boston--Doc Rivers is a lousy coach
Frank from Gloucester--the Yankees are great, at least Frank tends to be brief
They've got to make a list and limit these callers to one call a week or month. It should be easy to do with computers.

I think the sad truth is without the "regulars" they would have few callers and we'd have to listen to more of Ordway and the others tell us how things are and how to fix everything that's wrong. It amazes me that no owner has tapped one of these brains to run their franchise. They have all the answers to every problem.

95.9 for high school football and minor league baseball
100.1 for worcester college sports
95.3 for crimson hockey & football
90.3 for eagles ''

all ive really noticed so far..

To add to an earlier post in this topic; I was listening to Hardy and Trupiano over the weekend, not a bad show. I like Trup, can't say that I'm crazy about Hardy, but it's definitely better than Mustard and Johnson. Out of the blue they take a call from the infamous Steve from Fall River singing the same song as usual about the Patriots. They cut him off quicker than 'EEI usually does, but he still got two or three minutes. That's what's wrong with sports talk radio.
