Sports Talk Hosts Going off on Tangents

I don't know if I would agree.

I can't say I listen to his show every day but I was listening on Monday and he mentioned on Friday he would have on Woody Harrelson on as a guest.

I'm a casual listener to his show and find it enjoyable but not addictive. And I'm not saying you're incorrect, but I can also say I do not remember any calls to his show.

Again, it's just not 1987 anymore. The days of Pete Franklin saying "I talk to more sports fans than anyone" are over.

Today a host that views his show as an open forum would appear to be unprepared and lacking contacts.
You obviously don’t listen very well to his show. The mix of him the Dannettes, guests and callers are all blended into the show. Take our sports, not many people are doing a radio/TV show quite like they are.

To be honest, how many shows are about taking calls? It's not "Open Phone America" with Larry King anymore.
"Your calls, for the rest of the hour....Los Angeles, hello...."

I tried listening to Dan Patrick but he seems kind of smug so I wasn't really into it. Jim Rome still takes calls and he's been doing sports talk a long time too, probably not as long as Dan has.

Sound quality of cell phones is terrible
Sound quality between cell phones using VoLTE or “HD Voice” technology is far superior to anything the old POTS lines provided. The problem is when cell phones interface with the traditional POTS network, resulting in a huge quality loss. Bitrate differences between systems can also degrade audio quality.

VoLTE is now standard on cell providers as the old 3G networks have been shut down.

A problem with cell phones can be that the users don’t speak into them directly or wave them around while speaking, which leads to degraded sound.

But now a days, even up here cell to cell can sound good. Cant be on our 2G network.. but if youre on wifi calling to someone else on wifi.. it can sound excellent and there are ways to bluetooth/connect phones to the console

Here's all I'm saying. Callers are no longer essential for a sports talk show.

In fact in mentioning Rome, I think one of the reasons he's fallen off the top of the mountain is you do think of him just taking calls and letting the frat boy rant and "Rack It" and frankly that's not what shows do anymore.

I tried listening to one of his "smack offs" recently. I enjoy good sports trash talk.

I lasted half of the first caller. This is what's done on X or other social media platforms now.

And better, I might add.

Even if Patrick takes a call, how important is it to the show?

Is it a 5-minute one-on-one conversation on a topic, or is it a point advanced quickly and then discussed by the Danettes?

I was unaware that Dan Patrick is retiring from radio. Here's an interview:

My comment on his statement about ratings is he's a syndicated host. So his situation is different from local hosts.
He signed one final 5 year contract. He ends after the 2027 Super Bowl.
