Sportscaster headsets question

Are there any seasoned play-by-play vets on this board who can recommend their favorite headsets?

From initial research, the BeyerDynamic DT290 seems to be a popular, middle-price-range set.

Any recommendations—brand, model and seller? Any to avoid?

Thanks!

Dave Ramsey uses the Sennheiser HMD-280. I bought one and tried it. The mic has a dynamic element, and its output level is very low unless you put the element very close to your mouth. For the application I had, the sound of the element so close to my mouth was not what I wanted, so I returned it. I was using it with a Macke 1402-VLZ mixer. If you're going to use it with a board or preamp that has a transformer input, the level may not be as much of a problem. (The level is lower than an RE20, if you want to compare.)

If you're going to use it in a true sportscaster environment, it should work well for you. My application was more as a convenience for narration in a home studio. I'm a big Sennheiser fan, both for their products and for their company. At one point BSW had special pricing on the HMD-280.

I've used both the BeyerDynamic 290 and the Sennheiser HMD25. I definitely prefer the Sennheisers because they don't give the "itchy ear" that the Beyers do after a couple of hours. The Beyer seems to do a little better in a gymnasium for basketball (better pickup of the talent over the crowd), but I don't see a huge difference in sound quality otherwise.

I've used both of them but tend to prefer the Sennheiser as long as the earpads are new. If the stuffing in the earpads has gone flat, they start to hurt the ears after a while.
