I am happy that there is now an alternative to WIP in Philly, but was a little upset about the lack of local shows when 950 launched.

Last night on my ride home, Jody McDonald (drive time host) said that there will be second local show added in a few weeks (7 - 10 p.m.) which will be younger and wilder than his show (Joe Conklin?). He didn't mention if the FOX Sports morning show will remain on or not, but you would think they would get rid of that if they want to compete with WIP. I have a feeling that Jim Rome and Tony Bruno will remain since Bruno was pretty popular in his WIP days here.

Jody also mentioned a Saturday morning high school sports show hosted by his producer (missed the name) and the producer got on and mentioned who would be after his show on Saturday but the name didn't register with me. Just thought I'd fill you in if you missed it.

But if sports talk 950 was created more in the mold of WFAN and not WIP why is 950 trying to be WIP? Shouldnt night time programming be for live game coverage; ie college football, NBA B-BALL, HOCKEY, etc..

This format will not last, I listened to a few days of it and found it poorly produced and lacking any real entertainment.
Jody McDonald sounds lost and uninterested.and the reception is horrible!!

Well, since 950 doesn't have the rights to anything but St. Joe's, they don't have anything to run at night. That may be their only saving grace, when WIP has games on and folks want to talk about something else. But that's not much of a saving grace.

A HS sports show could be interesting--I remember when WIP had one in the early days. I perseonally found it to be an interesting little diversion.

I maintain that in a sports-centric town like Philly, the fact that the first opportunity to hear someone on the station talk about the Flyers/Sixers/Eagles/Phillies game until 3 p.m. dooms WPEN.

On their website which is up now, SportsTalk950.com, they have the FOX Morning show listed as regular programming. You've got to be kidding me, I hope that's subject to change. If they think they are going to survive with 3 syndicated sports shows in major dayparts in Philly, they're nuts. This won't last.<P ID="signature">______________

All over America, especially in big markets like Philly, there are guys who want to do sports talk but can't get themselves hired at the existing sports-talk stations. Now, if there's a station that's willing to take these guys' shows if the guys pay for the time and sell the spots, the stations and the guys are happy (at least until the guys find out that nobody is willing to pay them enough for the spots to cover the cost of leasing the time). That's the situation here in Boston with WWZN 1510, which has been sports-talk for quite a few years but has never shown up in the ratings despite a 50-kW full-time AM signal. For the last year or two, WWZN has been leasing time to program producers with program ideas that don't break the sports-talk format. At one point, they even leased out AM drive. Now, WWZN has TWO competitors--Entercom's powerhouse WEEI, which is one of the highest rated and highest billing stations in the market and the new ESPN 890/1400. So far, WWZN continues to hang on and to broker various dayparts despite very high fixed costs (the rent on the Tx site is reportedly $25,000/month).

From what I've read here, WPEN has been friendly to time-brokerage for at least the last few years. What can they lose by brokering out the 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM slot--especially if somebody is interested in doing a show that focuses on high-school sports? And, most of the year, the program producer will get his show on the air on WPEN's big new night signal. Even if the show only lasts a few months, it will be on the night signal since you're already into the part of the year when the sun sets before 7:00 PM.

Why shouldn't Philly listeners be able to enjoy a station filled with well-produced, professional sounding radio like Fox Sports Radio or ESPN Radio?

How about a reunited Conklin and Vinnie the Crumb. That would give PEN some local flavor with familiar voices.

Greater Media does it again....but PEN needs a good local morning beast to set the tone. Sadly, I don't see it happening. They seem to be trying to do things on the cheap, and the 3rd Law of Karma has 950 in its gunsights......Hoping I'm wrong....

Greater Media needs to hire someone to manage WPEN who believes in AM radio and who can offer an alternative that people will listen to. WPEN needs to do several things if Greater Media wants to use that station as anything other than a tax loss:

1. Stop trying to be a pale imitation of WIP. Bring in a full-service standards format with live personalities and news on the hour and half-hour. Yes, that would attract an older demographic...the demographic that has the disposable income! Besides, what does WPEN offer in the line of play-by-play sports? The Phillies are on WPHT, the Eagles are on WYSP, and WIP probably carries the rest. How can you have a successful sports station without sports?

2. Get that brokered crap off the air. No matter what the weekday format-of-the-month is, nobody wants to hear infomercials for laxatives, quack dietary supplements, shaky real estate deals, and the other garbage that dominates WPEN's airwaves on weekends and, possibly, other off-peak times. This certainly helped to kill the oldies format and the standards format that ran before it.

3. Despite what corporate engineering dictates, the IBOC equipment should be taken off the air and carried out to the nearest Dumpster. The only people who have AM IBOC receivers are a few engineers at the early adopter AM stations. For the rest of us, IBOC provides horrible, muddy audio with an annoying, broadband hiss that reminds one of the old Soviet white noise jammers used on shortwave during the Cold War.
