Spot Load on Podcasts

I listened to the most recent issue of Grammar Girl's Tips for Better Writing a few minutes ago with a stopwatch.

A 4:57 podcast contained 1:07 of advertiser copy and plugs. 22% of the content was extraneous to the show.

That's the equivalent of 13 minutes of spots in an hour of radio.

The question I have is whether this is too much. In an hour of radio 13 minutes of extraneous content is normal, sometimes even light. But most podcasts have maybe a minute of sponsorship and have a running length of an hour or so.

How much sponsorship runs on your podcast? Would you like to increase it? What level do you think listeners will tolerate?

I tried a listener supported format and no donations at all. Anyone doing this for fun will get by fine with no spots. If you want a real professional sounding production you will have to run commercials to pay for an experienced staff and quality web page. Also promotion is key to any podcast and that would add cost as well. Sure some "tricks of the trade" and word of mouth will get more listeners but it won't bring in the big numbers.
Listeners will just have to get used to the commercials. I hate commercials especially the annoying ones with jingles and loud noises. For now, I see there are too many podcasters and it's easy to get lost in the crowd. Listeners are impatient and some will be lost by adding commercials. The real question is how much to charge for the commercials. I estimate 25 cents per listener but that may be too high. My goal would be one exclusive advertiser on a hot podcast that everyone wants. This way you can keep the rate card high and allow more time for the actual program. If this can't be done, I would rather quit than produce a bad program - as we often hear now on commercial radio (too many breaks).
