Spots on KMCQ

I heard two spots (plus a couple of PSAs) The first was for a funeral home in Lakewood and the other was a repeated spot for Miller Construction. There is a link on their web-site for advertising - but nothing like you would find on other radio station's web sites (e.g., a name and contact number etc)

They are SLOWLY getting advertisers onto the station. It's only a matter of time before they become a full-blown station with DJs, spots, and anything else you'd see on any other commercial radio station.

Honestly, I would like to see KMCQ become a station like K-Earth 101 in Los Angeles. If KMCQ keeps their playlist, and gets some DJs with real personality, I think the station can be very successful, along with some clever jingles like K-Earth in Los Angeles.

People! Get a grip! This station is being run by bankers. Jocks? Jingles? Contests? Not going to happen and in light of the ratings they have achieved maybe who needs 'em?

KMCQ had an event at the Seattle Hard Rock last week featuring a Doors tribute band. Was co-sponsored by Silver Platters record store. They had a station contest to call in to win tix. Sounding more and more like a legit station to me. With bird-brains at KJR dropping American Top 40, perhaps KMCQ will pick it up. It could air 9 to noon on Sunday mornings and then go right into the 10,000 oldies show with Ted Alexander from noon til 3, or vice-versa.

I like that idea!

Glad to see them doing some promotion. And I must say that KMCQ is sounding better and better every day. It's the only station that doesn't burn me out. It's partially due to a lack of chalkboard-scratching, instant tune-out commercials such as those inane "cars for kids" commercials. But I've also gotta credit the length of time before having to endure Hotel California for the umpteenth time, plus getting to hear some oldies that I've never heard before. Considering that there's no on-air talent, it continues to be a very interesting station.

KMCQ has always been an 'interesting' station. However, I worry that some of the folks writing their well intentioned wishes as to how this station could be, should be, etc., still don't understand that this station's is simply merely a placeholder. It's real future is effectively being held in abeyance pending the disposition of it's next SALE/transfer of ownership....whenever the market improves or whenever the station really is forced to auction or go dark.

The current format will depart along with the MP 3 player as soon as the sale's approval and transfer is complete. There's nothing in any of this that KJR needs to worry about.

Regarding the recent 'promotions' of sorts, it is interesting that while things are in flux that there's one person at the Q who apparently is being allowed a meager allowance to play around a little and do some real, ambit radio promotion, which is a nice breath of fresh air around this market.

Ratings have started to dip on KMCQ as they began adding spots. Seems a great part of the appeal to the station was lack of commercials. KJR has jumped way up, since KMCQ added commercials. KMCQ finished in the one shares in prime demos in July.

Let me understand. KMCQ ratings are dipping because you say they are now running commericals, yet KJR-FM has about 20 times as many commercials as KMCQ and yet you say their ratings are through the roof in spite of those numerous commercials.

I'm not understanding that logic. Can you explain that?

Steve, the logic is this:

Apparently the total lack of commercials was of higher interest than the wide musical variety.

If the people who listened must now endure commercials then they'd prefer to listen to KJR FM for the more familiar music.

I think the answer lies in the fact that the KMCQ facility is a sub-standard one as compared to the KJR-FM facility. Not only does KJR emit much more power and coverage, but their processing is superior. KMCQ can't change their licensed output but they sure could install new audio processing in their air chain. Right now it sounds like a bunch of moths flying around in their equipment.

Here's my take on KMCQ and commercials. The fact that they added spots comes as no surprise to most listeners. Believe me, the "surprise" is that it has taken this long.

They're numbers are dropping because the novelty is wearing off. The songs they played have been the one's overplayed through the years or have now been heard often enough by their P1s that the "Oh Wow!" is gone. The window for really monetizing KMCQ has closed. I agree with those who think that once the issue is settled the format will change.

I for one welcome the spots. It tells me that KMCQ's numbers/audience are large enough to begin spending ad $ on the station. I will never prefer the tired "familiar" songs that KJR FM plays to the deep and entertaining play list on KMCQ. KJR FM will never get me back as a listener and it has NOTHING to do with commercials.

I am starting to wonder, why New Northwest Broadcasting or Townsquare, hasn't invested in KMCQ yet? It would be a great entry into the Seattle market, given they have already gone into the smaller markets in eastern Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska.

Good grief. KMCQ hasn't added THAT many commercial spots. Looking at the numbers, both KJR FM and KMCQ were up in June, and both dipped in July albeit KMCQ dipped a bit more than KJR FM but the fact is they both took a small dip. It seems the "experts" on this site are so hungry to be proven right about 104.5 that you cannot even fathom the thought of the station actually succeeding in the oldies format. Holy cow. Look at the listeners they have with ZERO station promotion other than word of mouth. I am sure a lot of it has to do with people being so bored with KJR FM that they've scanned the dial to seek out something better and found KMCQ. In the end, you "experts" may be right but I hope not. I hope the station breaks out with an advertising budget and soars in the ratings and you guys are forced to eat crow (and i don't mean Gary).

NNB is mostly in liquidation mode .. spinning to Townsqare, etc. & forming new venture for Anchorage & Astoria.

Last week I turned to KMCQ to hear two spots, one for KSTW (The Office), the other for a nursing home (I think?) in Spanaway.

Heard many spots for Don Willis Furniture on KMCQ over the holiday weekend. The station is also scheduled to be at a fund raiser in Lynnwood on 9/11 for the Lynnwood Police Canine unit. A Car/Dog wash at a Veterinary clinic by the Alderwood Mall.
