I have often said that one of the reasons MIX get's such spectacular numbers is there is no CHR in the market. Well now there is a CHR, it IS impacting MIXs ratings, and it's from the same cluster...KLUC.

KLUC is no longer a rhythmic that plays some pop. They now play so much pop that I would call them a rhythmic leaning mainstream. In fact their #1 most played song this week is Katey Perry "I Kissed A Girl". KLUC is now very much LVs version of KIIS/LA.

It is my belief that KLUC moving in more of a pop direction is the main reason KMXB fell from #1 to #6 25-54 and took a hit 18-34 as well. In fact June was an especially low 18-34 month for MIX, by that point KLUC was almost fully evolved to the pop heavy list they have today.

Some might argue that MIX and KLUC are still very different musically. Yes they are but it doesn't matter. Just having any type of CHR exist will steal some listeners who were using KMXB as a defalt CHR. MIX is a solid station and I don't expect them to fall apart. At the same time as long as KLUC plays this much pop, KMXB will not return to their peak glory.

I have more to say about everyone else latter. I just wanted to get this out now because I think it's the story of the Spring 08 book.

Winners this book include SUNNY. A solid #1 25-54 despite being attacked in all directions. What surprises me the most is their relative strength in younger demos. KSNE beats younger targeted ACs such as FRESH and co-owned PARTY in 18-34.

The biggest gainer this book was LA PRECIOSA. A nice welcoming gift for new owners Lotus.

EXTREME also had a big gain. This has to be Adam Carollas strongest market. Although most of KXTEs strength was concentrated in April. By next trend they should fall back to their normal range.

Country was up. The Rent or Mortgage contest paid off big time for KWNR in June. COYOTE had a smaller spike with their free gas giveaway.

FRESH was up over a share 25-54. But most of this was due to a really good May. I have noticed that Beasley stations have good months sporadically but don't often string several of them together..this has been going on for years.

The station with the largest drop was KOMP which fell from a tie for #2 25-54 in Winter to #15 in Spring. In 18-34 they fell from #4 to #12. This could be their worst book in history. I think it's a fluke and they will recover. Although programming rock will be a challenge in an increasingly ethnic market. Sister station the POINT also went down but not as drastically as KOMP.

KKLZ also had a huge drop from #4 to #14 25-54. They need to hold tight for PPM to arrive because Classic Hits thrives with the meter. For example KOLA/Riverside-San Bernardino was #1 both 12+ and 25-54 in the June Inland Empire PPM test.

Speaking of PPM, a format that is having tremendous difficulty with the meter system is Smooth Jazz. KOAS (and all SJ stations) can't be looking forward to it. In the meantime, the OASIS didn't do too great in the diary system, down close to a share to #17 25-54. Maybe the new lineup will turn things around???

PARTY had a disappointing book. It's way too early to tell as shows need time to build up an audience, but the first couple months of Kidd Kraddick have not done well at all. Whoopi did a whole lot better. What's interesting is people laughed at Whoopi and said she sucked, at least a lot of radio people did. No one is critical of Kraddick except for the fact that his show isn't local. The thing is Whoopi stood out more as being different while Kraddick's show, at least on the surface, blends in more and sounds like other morning shows. Maybe all the new billboards I see with Kraddick/Seacrest will help PARTY.

JACK is now the lowest rated full strength FM 25-54. Their music is as good as ever but the concept is as stale as can be. It's all over, they need to flip. But since CBS/Las Vegas is for sale why go through the expense of launching a new format. Let the new owner take care of that.

With the growth over the past decade in the N/W and S/E of middle to upper income persons, would a Triple A work here? There seems to be a big hole between younger and older listeners.

My guess is AAA would do horrible here, just as bad as the new one in LA which so far has an 0.7 share. There may be parts of town with high income, but overall LV has a low % of college educated. I remember ALBQ Tom mentioning on here that Las Vegas ranks as one of the lowest cities on Richard Florida's creative class list. AAA will only thrive in markets with lots of creative class types, markets like Denver, Portland, San Francisco, and Austin.

My friend jh brought up a format idea that I do think would be a great success...KXNT-FM. There is a big trend now on simulcasting or moving mainstream AM News-Talk stations to FM. These stations always get a boost 25-54. Several of the FM talk stations are doing REALLY good, but it has to be mainstream, not Hot Talk. Afterall most people under 55 don't listen to AM...ever. This is especially true in a market like Las Vegas. There are a lot of 25-54 year olds, especially 35-54 males who would listen to News-Talk on FM. I think it would be a great idea for JACK-FM to become KXNT-FM. Maybe their new owner, whoever that might be, will consider it.

I keep reading once in a while that KDAWN should move Savage looking at the latest 25-54 number that would be insane.

Yet KXNT is running promos with Mark Levin bragging about his ratings in Las Vegas. He said "I crushed the Weiner nation like the cockroach that he is".

He must be looking at different numbers than I see.

Well here are the numbers we saw. Looks like the promo is accurate after all.

3-5pm ratings (Mark Levin)

Men 12+ KXNT #1 KDWN #4
Men 25-54 KXNT #2 KDWN #5
Men 35-64 KXNT #1 KDWN #7

Persons 12+ KXNT #4 KDWN #10
Persons 25-54 KXNT #10 KDWN #16
Persons 35-64 KXNT #4 KDWN #9

Now that I see the specific hours Mark Levin is on, I stand corrected. Very impressive. He has a right to brag.

I remember posting a question about when LV was coming to Sin City. It seems PPM markets love rock and classic hits (which is Oldies, Gen II). I would expect the rockers to all rebound when that starts, and KKLZ might very well grow to Top 5 status. It will definitely shake out the market, perhaps forcing one of the weaker rock stations out of the game. In LV's case, that would favor KOMP and The Point. If Clear Channel ran Xtreme, they could stay afloat (PPMs dont care for "aggressive" pure rockers). This could also favor KVEG and The Party, depending on who has the meters. Of course, with the Valley's unique diversity, you cannot rule out the Hispanic-targetted stations, which along with urban stations, do not care for PPMs and have criticized this data collection device.

Here in Philly, our top stations are the runaway (locally owned) heritage AC, classic hits Gen II entrant, rhythmic CHR, watered down Classic Rocker and heritage all-news AM station. Yes, Philly is NOT Las Vegas, but it "could" serve as a premonition.

How unfortunate Underpaid (AKA KXNT EMPLOYEE) should mention that Levins numbers includes Hannitys 3 hours. The numbers he put out are the 12-6 numbers. Boring Jerry Doyles 3 hours are also included. That is why the numbers are so off. 3-7 head to head Savage beats Levin. Levin should be thanking his lucky stars that he has a strong lead in. If he didnt he would be lucky if he would be drawing a higher number than a KLAV infomercial. Like it or not Savage is carrying KDAWN he gets great numbers with no supporting cast. What is depressing about KXNTS numbers is that it shows how many simple minds live in Las Vegas. It is amazing how a Neo-CON Bush yes man station keeps the sheeple in their stables.

Actually I was just stating the exact numbers for 3-5, the time Levin is on. Glad you enjoy that new promo allvets, we will run it all week just for you and the sheeples.
