Spring Arbs Phase II

Steve seems to be doing pretty good as a VH station... Now if Gary can just keep things constant without the dips and upswings... Nice to see COS back in the 5 range lets just see how this mish mash of country and rock will work... CC1

LTY is doing very well. What you can't see behind the rankings is how badly WCOS is sliding or how much Variety Hits has cannibalized WNOK both in ratings and revenue. As for WCOS, Double O is gaining a lot of momentum. But then again, it's not hard to do when WCOS is trying out being a county/light rock station.

One can only think that it's just a matter of time before Tom Owen gets stirred up and starts knocking heads at Clear Channel Columbia.

Hey, thanks for telling us these numbers were for COLUMBIA.

I'd like that 30 seconds of my life back, please. ::)

LOL. I guess not everyone keeps up with Trend release dates!

It will be interesting to see where all the non-minority 18-34's are after March rolls off. I wonder if Clear Channel expected WLTY to be the monster it appears to be.

Steve has put CC in kind of a pickle... For the most part it is what WNOK once was a fence straddler which is what a VH station is supposed to be... You also have WNOK who is still a fence straddler who is pretty much Hot AC during the day and a true CHR at night then there is The Beat which for the most part has stuck to its guns since launch and is doing pretty decent 12+... Steve, Bob in Austin TX as well as The Arch in St Louis are some good text book examples on how well VH is doing... I also must include Jack in the city of Angels which is also doing very good... What would you do with NOK? Is now the time for CC to let NOK be a full fledged CHR or should they stay the course and keep doing what they are doing... In more ways The Beat seems to be helping ICCB by making DM look that much stronger... Why in the world is Hot running Wendy Williams at night??? Maybe that explains those impressive numbers hot has been putting up... I know we will never see Hot be the big success it once was, but either Diaries are falling in the wrong place or it is time for ICCB to start looking at alternatives on how to correct what was once a rock solid station... CC1

Carroll:

I think we're seeing a saturation in the Urban segment of the market. Now folks are just sloshing around from station to station.

NOK is in a pickle in more ways than one. It has always been a fence straddler in one manner or another. It did well fending off competitors... until their competitor came in-house. I don't really know what I'd do with NOK.

What you can't see unless you have access to some of the break-outs is that WLTY is clobbering B106 in morning drive... with no AM show! So maybe the "Best of Columbia" AM Show should go this year to the Prophet System!

Also Woody Windham is really knocking them dead (perhaps literally, as well (j/k)). Good for Woody! Or prhaps that is Goody for Woody!

ARQ is still losing 25-54's albiet really slowly.

WWNU is not as bad off at the seemingly stagnant numbers seem. On the lower end, it is doing pretty well. It is lacking in 25-54's though. I guess the lesson would be to either focus and kick up the tempo and bang out the young country hits or make the station a more credible choice for the 25-54's walking away from WCOS.

I've started hearing lots of negatives from now former WLTY listeners. I don't know whether I am getting an accurate street feel on that because what I hear and what the numbers say three months later are not jiving. The real challenge for any variety hits is to keep the novelty of the format from wearing off.

I really like the VH format that Steve is doing... I don't know if the fine folks at CC intended for the voice to be a Jack rip off, but I really like the music... One thing to remember with VH formats they can always be tweaked, but for at least this phase Gary seems to have Steve running on all eights... Remember the negatives you are hearing is what Gary needs to work on and once you have the listener "keep them". That is why it is always interesting to see all the fluctuations of the numbers that come out for Steve... As for access no I don't have the access to the other numbers, but I can get a general idea... As for Woody I am glad he is still doing great on the radio... I have not listened to OMG in a few months, but might have to give them a listen... As for morning shows that would be a hoot ;D. What will now be interesting is to see what Citadel will do with 107.5 once they get things rolling... I had thought maybe they would try a music format on that stick, but I have an instict we might see Citadel do to WISW like what they have done up in Knoxville and have WISW am and FM to give the outlying areas some NT product... CC1

From what I heard, Gary is no longer programming WLTY.

There is some precedent for it doing well. WCEZ as a WWOne automated Soft AC was Top 5 in the market consistently before Clayton Radio took it off the bird for WAAS Star 93.5. I found the old Star banner when I moved... maybe I'll bring it to the reunion/gathering!

Guess guess for WNKT Carroll. That's what I would do. The other choices would be a CHR or an Active Rock. But given the demo of the Citadel cluster, N/T with USC Sports would be the best choice. Citadel does CHR/AC/Country/Classic Rock and N/T well.

Dudefan,
I haven't seen the full trends, but your comment about Steve clobbering B106 in mornings is inaccurate based on the most recent book (Winter). 25-54 Persons WTCB was 2nd in morning drive, not behind WLTY. If I remember correctly, WLTY was fifth or sixth in mornings.

Did you mean WNOK? Since they were voted Columbia's Best AM Show and WLTY is clobbering NOK, and NOK is on prophet system, while TCB is on Scott systems. I thought it might be a slip of the tongue (uh, fingers).

It's been interesting to watch Steve prosper. The numbers seem to be at the expense of just about everyone in town. They are about the only "music only" morning show, so they seem to have taken two shares each from WNOK, WTCB, WMFX (if not three or four from them), WOMG, and maybe WCOS. The thing is, my sales friends tell me that Steve is not even close to billing like the #2 station in the market should. And the money it has cost WNOK and WCOS by outranking them has caused a billing near disaster.

As for Woody, good for him. But have you listened? It's live commercial after live commercial after live commercial. Unlistenable.

I still believe WCOS is running scared by adding in that pop song per hour. I heard a rumor that Pam Wilder was leaving the Charlie and Pam show. Is that true? Again, this came from my sales contacts, so they may have misunderstood. But if Pam leaves that show, that would be a huge loss. I think she's a terrific talent.

It was the trends 25-54. DM, LTY, LXC, MFX, FMV.

I was making a veiled reference to WTCB's AM show, which always seems to win the SCBA and the Columbia Best of that J.R. doesn't win. With this trend, it appears that the CCU Prophet running Steve will have to be unplugged and brought to the stage. If things change, then Brent will have to bring his Scott System with him.

You are right. An acquaintance of mine does media buying and for the ##'s Steve has, the rates are awfully low. 15 years ago stations with those numbers were getting 100+ in A.M. drive. Not anymore, I guess. You are correct, it is a total disaster. Why pay JR or COS rates when you get Steve for 50% or more off. I heard Five Points bar spots in middays and afternoon drive on Steve!

Woody's always done lots of live spots. Yep, they are unlistenable to folks that like good, tight, radio, but Woody has never been any of those three things at the same time. And folks love him for it, it seems. Counterintuitive eh?

A Clear Channel insider said Pam is leaving. Out of valour, he did not say the real reason for the departure. Methinks it was not her choice and that it reflects more on the current atmosphere than on her personally.

That's pretty sad that the Top four morning shows in the trends are syndicated or computerized.

That's also a shame about Pam. It's also ironic that she and Charlie won that big country morning award and they are the Columbia show that's up for the SCBA this year. If she is being forced out, that must show that Clear Channel is about to hang a "for sale" sign on this cluster. That's nuts. Do you think Jonathan Rush is next? I was told he's the highest paid mornings in the market by far. By I hear Roper makes a mint over at New 92.

I'm not sure what J.R. is making. I am sure that he is one of the few 100k+ morning guys left in the market. However, having that big of a price tag, it would make me nervous because there's eventually going to be someone that's going to say "Heritage? Who cares? Someone else can do almost as well for less." It's what happened to Rick Dees. Shame, but isn't that how the broadcasting business is?

I know some folks have bandied about J.R. moving over to WCOS. But as far as I know that is speculation. He's a pro and he'd be able to make it work well. Certainly, he'd draw better than Roper, who's barely moved the needle.

Interesting stuff there Steve... I would love to find some of the old numbers to see how the big players were doing say just 6 years ago to really see how the market has changed... I am looking forward to my visit this year... I want to really listen to what each station sounds like including morning drive, midday, pm and night time... I guess for the most part it is all cyber jocked except for DM, B and Hot... Should make for some fun listening... CC1

Oh, you'll get a kick out of COS. Absolutely terrible. and the morning show, award winning or no, was almost unlistenable. All the energy and charisma of a footstool. Amazing that 92 hasn't cleaned these guys clocks yet, but, being from outside the market, I can't really pick up 92 - so they may suck too.

I don't know how well I will be able to pick up New 92... It will be interesting to hear my old class mate Jeff Roper if I can pick NU up... As for WCOS my sister was talking to me yesterday and wanted to know when Tom Petty was considered "Country"!!! What is scary about this whole Classic Rock thing is that our local country station up here in Rockford owned by the Cloud Company has started to sneak in some classic rock songs yet the funny thing is their sister station is ummmmm Classic Rock... Maybe I am to old school, but every time I hear China Grove by the doobies followed by Brad Paisley there is something is bad wrong with that picture... CC1

This tells you how dominent the African-American listener is in Columbia. Three of the top 5 stations are aimed at black listeners.

Who'd think WTCB would only rate #5, WCOS #6 and WMFX #8 a few years ago?

OK I know this has been ask by yours truly, but what kind of signal will 107.5 have as compaired to say 98.5? I ask this because even though my gut is going with talk or an active rocker how would Kiss 107.5 sound... Better coverage or is the 107.5 stick not a good choice to move Kiss to... Citadel has really built up Kiss since the days of The Touch format and I think it would do very well on a stronger stick to go up against DM... JMO CC1
