Spring book is out...any thoughts and ramblings.

So the spring book is out. I for one think WHVR should have done better. I just love Gil Sheffer. He is the heart and soul of that station. A first year broadcast student he is not. In fact you could learn a thing or two from him. I record his broadcasts and listen to them over and over. It is probably a cell phone vs land line thing with arbitron. Most of us Gil-Heads just rock the celly. peace

Gee Mr. Diggs
I would have thought since you are an employee of
Times and News Publishing Co. that you would have
been expecting your own AM station to do better.
Glad you have such concern about WHVR. But here
my friend its all about the BILLING...and its GOOD!

Really not taking a shot at WHVR. I like the station. I just don't see Gil to pick on him and his blue shirt. Gil-Heads......I'm a kidder. I kid.

Nothing really surprised me during this spring book ... the stations that are doing fine are still doing fine and some small surprises but nothing major. as far as I'm concerned.

some stations need to look at what there doing in work hard at changing somethings. maybe move people around or update the format a little bit here and there.

but no big surprises

Regarding WGTY's terrific showing...three things come to mind......

1. Billboards up all over the market promoting their "Cash stimulus" contest.
2. Giving away $$$$. In a recession, this had to be a hit.
3. Artists and songs that people actually get excited about......Taylor, Brad, Toby, Sugarland...need I say more.

So, if cash poor Cumulus were to flip one of their stations without this kind of committment, it would be a bleep on the radar.

While I don't think it is impossible to beat WGTY, it would take a very committed effort. They seem to do very well in York/Adams but they hardly have any audience outside York/Adams. I think country music listeners will listen to the station in their area. The west shore seems to like Red 102.3. Dauphin and Lebaon counties listen to Bob. York/Adams listens to GTY and Lancaster/Berks listens to IOV. Of the four country stations, GTY does the best job catering to their area.

Having said that country radio nowadays is very similar to top 40 radio 25 years ago. How many teenagers listened to country radio in 1985 vs. 2000. I used to like country radio but now many of the acts like Swift, Underwood, Flats and some of the other new acts are not really country. Central Pa could use a station that concentrates on Americana/Classic country.

ray thomas and wioo at 1000 am and 97.9 do a great job with the classic country in carlisle. i hope they can buy a 5+kw stick fm on a distress sale someday.

Catering to the local area is still the best formula for success. In a recession it's easy to just cut costs to the bone.....makes sense right? But once you start soundiing too much like a cookie cutter station that could come from anywhere....you start to hurt youself. People will always listen to a station the talks about events and happening that are LOCAL to it's market.
