Spring Book:Winners include KWNR,Mix,Spanish language radio

KWNR was once again #1,this time with one of ther best books in history. KMXB also did very well, almost beating their spectacular Summer 04 record high. KWID 101.9 went up yet another share and KISF 103.5 made a nice comeback, between KWID and KISF Spanish language radio is booming in Las Vegas.

While in the middle of the pack, I noticed that KKLZ is at it's highest level in several years. I would guess they are especially doing well in some adult male dems.

I would give the dissapointment award to KJUL. This was by far their worst book in their long history as an adult standards station. If the rumors are true and they do go full blown AC when Tesh starts, the timing could not be more perfect.

Of course this was the last pre-Jack book. Starting with the next trend we wll start to see which stations Jack impacts the most. What I find interesting is that no national pattern is emerging. Some Jack type stations are flying right out of the gate (such as the Arch in St Louis), some are getting off to slower than expected starts. Some hurt the stations you would expect, some do not.

If anybody has 25-54 rankings (just rankings, actual numbers aren't allowed on this site) those would be great to look at, more meaningful than 12+ of course.

Haven't seen any 25-54's but there are some very healthy stations here.

Top 3 25-54

Top 3 25-54 KWNR-KWID-KMXB

Other stations that did well 25-54 include KISF,KOMP,and KKLZ.

Top 3 mornings 25-54

1.KWNR-The Wakin' Crew with Brooks and Mitch
2.KMXB-Mark & Mercedes
3.KXTE-Howard Stern

KWNR was #1 25-54 in every daypart...mornings,middays,afternoons,nights, and weekends. I know they don't have a direct competitor but this is still quite impressive. In all the years I have been following Las Vegas radio ratings I don't recall a station sweeping every daypart until now.

Another station without any direct competition that had and continues to have bad books is KQOL. 15th in the market 12+, what's the problem there...music...personalities...programming?

In fact, in June, KISF beat KWID by more than double. A similar implosion happened in Fresno, where Preciosa was beated more than 2 to 1 by KOND in May and June. KWID has moved to an 80's based oldies format, and has lost share in all the competitive markets.

Do you think they will go back to putting 60s and 70s oldies in the mix?

I don't think they are bright enough.. It's Clear Channel, after all.

All of the above!

Re: Top 3 25-54

To win, KQOL needs to be West Coast Boss Radio, not Back East Greaser Doo Wop.

Think '65 L-88 Corvette, not 58 Edsel....

KQOL

How about market landscape? True KQOL isn't the station they once were but from a competitive standpoint, they have at least 2 DIRECT competitors: KJUL and KXPT.
Both stations overlap KQOL's turf and if the Oldies station isn't totally focused in all the right areas, listeners have reason to tune one way or the other.

Boss Radio

Your Corvette to Edsel comparison is a good one. But the "West Coast Boss Radio" thing has been over for several years. Any Oldies station that takes that tact is toast.

Boss Jock radio was phenomenal in it's time- but it's 2005 and the shuck & jive days of jocks are history (sad to say).

Thanks man...but actually, the "Toast" thing isn't true. BIG OLDIES 93 did exactly that. (Before "The Famous" Jack Evans got his hands on it.) We came in as the SECOND oldies station here in Las Vegas and kicked KOOL 105's ass for a year and a half straight.

I didn't say, "Boss JOCK Radio"....I said "Boss Radio". The difference is the future of the format. No shuck...No jive. Just great jocks at the top of their game, playing the CORRECT music.

I would not call it an ass kicking; Big Oldies beat Kool but not by enough to make them go away. That 1000 watt blowtorch broadcasting from a hill in Boulder City only went away after being paid a lot of money to change formats.

Well I would...."That 1000 Watt", HERITAGE Oldies station became the second oldies station in about 6 months, and BIG OLDIES had higher numbers then COMPETING with that HERITAGE Oldies station, than the UNCOMPETED with KOOL 93.1 has by itself...And how did THAT happen?

"The Famous Jack Evans" decided that the "KOOL" monicker was worth paying 5-Million bucks to Beasley. Not only did he want the intellectual property, he wanted the staff too. Most said no. Kahuna eventually said yes, after "The FJE" made to money too good to refuse...Steve did the right thing. I would have signed too...But:

Mike Ginsburg asked me to extend my morning contract by six months, "...because of budgetary concerns." BEING A TEAM PLAYER, I said yes. At the end of that six months, he asked for another 90 days, "...because the budgetary concerns hadn't been taken care of yet." BEING A TEAM PLAYER AGAIN, I said yes again....

As it turned out, it took the first six months for Kahuna's KOOL 105 contract to expire. About 30 of the next 90 days were taken finalizing K's Clear Channel deal, and then he came over. PUTTING MY EGO IN MY POCKET, AND STILL BEING A TEAM PLAYER, I went back to afternoons, and was then fired because I, "...was making too much money (55K) for an afternoon drive guy in Las Vegas."

So, when you hear me calling out SOME Las Vegas radio management...my taking exception to being accused of not being a team player...of not keeping quiet about getting completely screwed-over...(More than once, BTW), I suggest you keep in mind that it HAS happened to me, and it WILL happen to you. It's only a matter of time...

What you have seen me post here isn't just "bitter" whining....It's a warning, from a guy who has lived it, and is simply trying to cover your back. And if I don't, who will?

PS: Didn't KOOL 105 have 3,000 Watts? I thought it was a Class A FM....

No John it was a lonely little 1000watt station Broadcasting from the top of an ant hill in Boulder city.
And I still say that if you look at the ratings back then, it was not an ass kicking.

I never said you were bitter, just that it was not an ass kicking.
I'm also not here to start a pissing match, only wet feet result from that.

Next time I see you I'll tell you a wonderful story.

Wow! I thought the FCC minimum was 3K for Commercial FM's....Thanks!

The "bitter" thing comes from others who bash me on this board, not you. And, as for the pissing match/ass kicking thing, We at Big Oldies came, We saw, We conquered...My last book featured the number referred to as a "snowman" on the golf course. At least I was number one.

"Next time I see you I'll tell you a wonderful story."---Huejazz

That would be really KOOL....I'll look forward to it.
