What bothers me is WJCK (JACK) is doing better than I thought. I have been under the impression that the JACK formatted stations were not doing to well across the country, being that WCBS in NYC is going (almost) back to what they were. It makes me wonder if some other FM in NYC will pick up the JACK format up there, or is it a waste of time?

I'm not a programmer, but back when I was just working as a jock from market to market, I knew when the #'s in the book started to fall, you better watch your butt, cause you may not have a job tomorrow. I'm glad I'm out of that rat race. My blood pressure at 44 years old can't take it!

which markets?
BTW...Nashville's JACK and the recently-moved-to-HD2 NYC Jack are light years apart...no correlation whatsoever.

It appears that there's a little upward movement in performance for Supertalk. Appears their hires for early and mid mornings are paying off. Prior to this, they were being hurt by a lack of local programming.

As you know, I'm not a programmer, so I don't keep up with too much of that stuff, but Chris, if you been keeping up with the HD threads, plan ole folks like me are not going out to buy a specialized antenna to get HD signals. This week, I saw an article where one manufacture has stopped making HD radios. Is this going to be like AM stereo in the 80's? I loved AM Stereo until that damn NRSC bunch made us cut back AM bandwidth to 10 Khz, then that was it!

"if you been keeping up with the HD threads" ?
I don't put much faith in how HD is doing (or will do) by on-line threads...

HD 2 does not seem to be making much progress. Perhaps I am wrong (Noooooooooo, not me lol), but it is not doing particularly well based on what I have heard. You radio folks may know better on this HD thing.

Since HD2 was developed to be somewhat of an answer to satellite radio in terms of sound quality and programming, HD in some case has not even scratched the surface of getting together a deep cut rock station that would compare to Deep Tracks on XM or the Vault on Sirius. The one in Memphis sounds like their HD1 station. One fellow I know sent them an e-mail and said. Listen to XM deep tracks, get a pad and pencil, take some notes and get a clue!! I know you all hate to hear us know nothing fans say such things.

On the ratings thing. Since I am a classic rock kind of guy, I am glad to see 105.9 doing well. Years ago, maybe 8 years ago, I sent their(105.9) program director Big Wally a sample playlist of tunes via the e-mail route. He graciously wrote me back and said he'd love to do something along those lines, but, BUT, you radio guys know what the but was. lol
My sample play list was all over the place. I think I put Mike Bloomfield and Electric Flag in the mix.LOL Big Wally said he wish he could play that.

Anyway, I know I am a broken record on this. I do not mean to be critical of radio, but I do wish a day would come that could change all of this. I remember reading a post from ScottWMRO that explained why this could not be done as of this time. It is all about demos, advertisers, bean countin’ goobs to borrow a phrase that someone else used, not I lol

SwissVol,

Your right, sadly, radio is not like it was in the 50's & 60's. It all started with Payola. As more jocks got busted for it, radio stations and thier owners started getting tight about what was aired and Program Directors were given more authority to tighten playlist and the jock had no freedom.

Today, it's all about the bean counters, numbers, and demos. Compaines became larger coporations and made something so simple so complex, that when they walk into thier meetigns with General Managers, and high up Executs., those numbers, graphs and the so called listening test, limited to just a few in a market was what would be. We now live in a coporate world and even outside radio, this same sort of examples are there.

That was well-stated Scott ---

It's sad that most folks got into radio 'in the day' to fly in the face of the corporate world -- to seek
change through the music -- to be individuals, yet flourish and be assets to great teams.

That's all gone and the very people in positions of power are missing 75% of potential revenues
and success by playing their behind closed doors control games that have robbed our airwaves
of creativity, energy and the element of excitement and surprise.

The curtains been pulled back in NYC and it's not pretty. I wish those in power would see the
golden opportunity to take radio back to it's roots and reap huge returns. BUT that ain't gonna
happen.

Kinda like seeing the Whole Foods CEO playing childish stab games on the internet --- GREED
seems to be the only common tread anymore. Sad.

Keep up the fight.

They still have the Jack format in NY - they just threw in a couple of 60's songs an hour and changed the name to WCBS! Maybe the different personalities will take it in a different direction - it is only day 2 so I have to give them a break.

HD radio = yawn.

HD Radio will only begin to make progress when two things happen:

(1) HD radio receivers finally become available in multiple models, at relatively low prices, and get a good amount of shelf space at Wal-Mart

(2) When you can purchase realtively low cost HD Radio adapters you can install yourself in your car, and play the HD channels through your built-in radio
