It is with great sorrow that we report today the loss of our friend and colleague, Michael "Spyder" McGuire. He was an inspiring person who loved his family, his listeners and our community. Above all, Spyder was our friend. How blessed we are to have had him in our lives. WJRZ and Greater Media extend our sincere condolences to the McGuire family.
 
We love you Spyder...We will miss you so much. You were our bright light, our shining star. Thank you for giving meaning to this business we call radio..Thank you for making me feel so welcome when I started WJRZ a few months back.. I know a lot of Beatles music will be playing up in heaven, my friend. Keep watch over all of us. We will never forget you. Rock on dear Spyder!!
 
Spyder was a true professional and a great friend. It's a shame there are so many jerks in the world, and someone who was so amazing had to die so young. Spyder always gave 150-percent and cared about his job even during his illness. He was the most unselfish person I know and the least egotistical person I have ever worked with. I feel fortunate to have worked with him and to have been his friend. Rest in peace my friend...you will never be forgotten.

Even though I never met Spyder, I feel like I knew him. His personality really came though on the radio. Not to be corny, but the radio community is like a family, especially in a place like New Jersey, and we've lost a member of that family. My condolances to Spyder's family & many friends & co-workers. A tip of the ol' transmitter.......
 
What a shock. I worked with Spider for almost 20 years at WAYV (he spelled his name that way then); most of that time he was the morning host. He was one of the nicest guys in radio, a tru pro who always gave his all. He will be missed.
 
On the air, I used to joke that Spyder McGuire was "the second nicest man in radio" -- and he was okay with that, because #1 was one of his idols, Harry Harrison.

When you see someone every day at 4 AM, you really get to know him and what he's all about ... so let me echo what Pete Tauriello said this morning: "Good night, sweet prince. And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."

Spider started in the Atlantic City market doing overnights on
WOND in about 1978 or 1979. I worked 6 to Midnight and
we always watched "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" together
at 11 when he came in. I'm thinking he got the WAYV gig
around 1981, because I know he was still at WOND in 1980
because he went up to WIFI-92 and hung out with me and
I started there in October of 80.

Very sad to hear of his passing. R.I.P. Spider !

I was very sorry to hear of Spyder's passing. I last saw him in October and had the chance to catch up on things for a while. I'm glad I had that opportunity. When I first started at WJRZ in 2000, I followed Spyder on the air. Having been out of the business for almost 20 years, Spyder made me feel like I never left. He was not only a big help, but he made me feel comfortable and right at home. That's the type of guy he was. We're both big Beatlemaniacs and always liked discussing the Fab Four.

Rest in peace my dear friend. My condolences to his family and all those in the radio family that had the chance to work with and know Spyder.

I can only echo what Anita said earlier: Spyder was one of the nicest people, not only in radio, but in life. He was great to work with, and was always fun at events - even in the 100 degree heat at Sounds of Summer. He was a good friend, and was above all else, a selfless person who genuinely cared about the people he worked with. I remember when I had to take a week off from putting Brunch w/The Beatles together, so Spyder had to do it himself. He called me on my way to CT and asked if it was ok if he started to produce the show himself - he just wanted to make sure that I wouldn't loose out on hours. That's the kind of guy he was.

Before I came to WJRZ in 06, I would call him when getting off work at Great Adventure and he would always try to squeeze in my pre Beatles requests before he got off the air.

My deepest condolences go out to his family and friends - he will be missed by everyone who knew him.

I got the call from Glenn Kalina this morning with the sad sad news. To say that I'm in shock is an understatement to say the least.
I, along with MikeF, also worked with Spider (as we knew him) years ago at WAYV. I had always heard of him before then (from WOND), but only got to meet him while working at a bank in Ocean City wile P/T at WMID in A.C. When I got to WAYV in 1981, I pitched him to my boss and got to work with one of the nicest people I will ever meet in this business. More important, I got to call him friend.
Spider, to me, was amazing! He was always calm in the face of chaos, good for a laugh, and a great sounding board when needed. Though we would speak from time to time in recent years, the phone conversations were always as if no time had ever passed. The "NowhereMan" (as was once part of his e-mail address) will always be "somewhere" in my thoughts and memories.
My prayers go out to his family and his many, many friends in and out of the radio realm.

This is incredibly sad news for sure. Having met Spyder only a few months ago I can honestly say that first impressions are indeed everything and he was a true professional in every sense of the word. He effortlessly performed his show, took requests and did a contest all while "showing me the ropes" at WJRZ making sure that I knew what he did, how he did it and why he did it at every turn. People like this are very scarce in society, let alone in the radio business where you have two kinds of people: Those who are solely out for themselves and those who want to see the "little guy" make it to the top knowing that their influence played a great part in it like Spyder. Here is yet another example of just how accurate Billy Joel was as "Only the Good Die Young!" Rock and Roll Heaven has a "hell of a band" and now they can add yet another true-talent to their arsenal of jocks!!

It was my privilege to have not only met him but also to call him a colleague. We even shared the common bond of being William Paterson University Alumni. My condolences to the McGuire Family during this most difficult time.

Rest in Peace Spyder and thanks for being a genuine "Good Guy!" No Beatle record will ever play at WJRZ without thinking of you!!

I never had the pleasure of meeting Spyder in person, but I could tell he was great guy, and reading everyone's posts here proves that even more ...
We did, however, exchange e-mails a few years ago when I was trying to put things together for the New Jersey Radio Museum - and he was very hospitable to me ...
A true, true loss in the radio community ...
You will be missed, Spyder ...
 
The voices heard first when I returned to to South Jersey in '81 were Chuck Kramer at WFPG-AM,
Russ & Richards and George Kurtz at WMID, and Spyder McGuire at WAYV, leading the way with amazing ratings. He will leave an unfillable whole in the radio talent of South Jersey Radio.
 
I'm breaking my silence for this very special man. I was in the unenviable position of having replaced Spyder and then HE replaced ME at JRZ. I've known him since the early 80's when I wanted to hire him at the old WHLW just before it became WOBM-AM. He never showed up for the appointment. I guess he was happy in A.C. back then. We DID share a few laughs about that...and our love for Beatle-related music. One of the real nice guys has left us. And "In My Life" now means even more than it did before.
I am sure the entire Jersey radio community--and it IS a community, is sharing the sorrow today.
I have NEVER heard a bad word about this gentleman spoken by anyone! That in itself is FAB. We'll miss you.

I'm so saddened by this news. I worked with Spyder many times and he was one of the nicest people I've ever worked with in radio.

I'll miss him.
 
My thoughts and prayers go out to Spider's family. He was truly a soft spoken gentleman of the ether. I got to work with him at WAYV back in the day. He had a great laugh, and he always had something positive to say. What in the world will NJ radio be without the Spiderman? Your voice like velvet rain will be missed, old man. I'll drink one for you at the Irish.
 
Having interned at WJRZ Spyder was a great guy and a Pleasure to work with. This is a sad loss for WJRZ and Radio. I am thakfull i had the opportunity to work with Spyder a true professional.
 
My condolences to the family of SPYDER McGUIRE. I first met SPYDER McGUIRE when I came in for training @ WJRZ. SPYDER was doing evenings and he was a most cordial, friendly... AND COMPETENT person. SPYDER taught me a lot, and the one thing that sticks out in my mind is this. SPYDER was doing a remote and when he couldn't hear the first beat or sound of a song, he was cool. He told me for the next time to pot it up so he could hear it... then pot down for a good mix. As it turned out, the majority of the fill-in work I did was for... SPYDER McGUIRE!! As is everyone in the radio community, I am saddened for the loss of a TRUE RADIO TALENT AND A GENTLEMAN... SPYDER McGUIRE.

So sorry to hear of the passing of one of the best, most professional personalities I have ever had the privilege of working with. Spyder loved his career choice. He had a gift of truly connecting with people one-on-one. Inside the station, he was a true professional each and every day, doing whatever was asked of him. At events, there was always a crowd of adoring fans around him. His love of the Beatles was evident whenever he put together special programming segments. Radio is losing a gifted, talented individual.

There's a very special place in heaven for Michael "Spyder" McGuire. Rest in peace.

I was very sad to hear of the passing of Mike (Spyder) McGuire. I first met Spyder while attending William Paterson University in 1973. We worked at the college radio station together and we loved the business of radio. I'll never forget the British Rock special that we did together at the station. We had a great time and Mike really made the show not only sound great but he provided some really interesting information about the music. Mike was a true professional and one of the kindest people that you'd ever want to meet. After college, I visited Spyder while on vacation in Wildwood NJ. He was on the air at WCMC and really loved what he was doing. I regret having lost touch with him but he will always be remembered. He will certainly be missed
