St. Louis Area Bandscan Highlights (East Metro) 9/16/19

Collinsville, IL. 10 miles east of downtown St. Louis. Hotel room, Sony SRF-37 Walkman, Quick scan, omitting the obvious. Nighttime unless otherwise indicated.

530: R, Enciclopedia. Fair
540: CBK. Weak, but on top
620: Knoxville, TN...Mild surprise
650: WSM...like a local. And with brilliant audio.
670: WSCR...weak daytime. Stronger at night with R. Rebelde underneath
720: WGN. Fair
740: CFZM Blasting
770: WABC...barely, but steady. Local WEW is a daytimer.
780: WBBM, Fair at best
860: CJBC. Fair....not as strong as diplexed CFZM
880: Local rimshot from Highland, IL on top, but WCBS undeerneath
890: WLS. Good. Strongest Chicago skywave
990: CBW. Fair
1000: WMVP Fair but alone, no XEOY
(KMOX stick was only a couple of miles from me and blew out some of the middle part of the band)
1290: Looking for WIRL. Instead I got WHIO with a good signa,
1430: KZQZ 50 kw Day signal overloaded 1400-1450. At night it disappeared completely. 100% gone. 5kw, but my location was in the null protecting Indianapolis.

Somewhat surprising to me that you can hear WMVP "fair" at night. I would think you'd be more in their null. Speaking of nulls another surprise that you can't even hear a whisper of KZQZ where you are. That's quite a null. How about WYLL, any sign of it?

Nice catch on WHIO. I'm only 75 miles east of them and never hear them after nightfall, but their east and west lobes at night go south of me and do appear aimed in the general direction of St. Louis.
Little surprise at WMVP as well. I never heard them when I lived in Houston.

I was surprised with WMVP myself. But no trace of XEOY, KTOK, or anything else. KZQZ was another surprise for sure. As for WYLL, KMOX blew out that area of the dial. On most of my trips to St. Louis, I've stayed in the "West County" Missouri suburbs. I can't remember hearing WYLL at night, but I did used to hear them (as WJJD) several times when they powered up in the morning after sunrise.

And schmave...WHIO was yet another surprise. Not an overwhelming signal, but strong enough to own the channel.

When I was DXing in Tulsa in the 70's, WHIO was a regular on Monday mornings (IIRC they were off and signed on at 5am my time). I believe they have a night lobe pointing right at Tulsa (and STL). At other times, KOIL, and sometimes WIRL, dominated.

I don't believe I ever heard WCFL from Tulsa. KTOK was not that strong either and XEOY was usually on top.

When WCFL signed off on Monday mornings I heard both KTOK and XEOY. Most often it was XEOY.
