St. Louis/Jefferson City Inquiry:

St Louis/Jefferson City, Well..more like Montgomery City:
(but could one "sell" it as a jefferson/st louis station?)

On the website, buysellradio.com, featured is
"KMCR" (103.9) with an asking price of 500K.
*Disclaimer* I am not looking to purchase a station,
I am just curious..because I just want to know...
and, this is the best place to ask such a question. Most post-ers
here, are accurate, informative and honest, and that is
greatly apperciated..

Not being in Missouri (I am actually in Niagara falls USA) it
is especially tough to tell any thing about a station..many
miles away..this may be a steal; or it may have a long history
of just being a "bad" frequencey.

Never know when some one will come into serious money, and I
would just like to have an idea of what is "fair" and "worth it"

Over a decade ago, i worked at a small AM operation, about fifty
miles south of market #52, (Buffalo-niagara falls) and i was
shocked to see, WSPQ, sell for a "mere" $110,000 For that station,
it was surprisingly low..but at the same time, about as much as
they could ask for...considering the surronding area..

i know I would rather have my house than a small AM stick in the country...heehee..but my state(NY) has the mega millions..if i ever
win the jackpot, that could change every thing..i know i would want an "FM" station versus an AM operation...and, just want to know, is
this KMCR in any one's *actual* listening area....or, will the potential
buyer be making music for the cows on the pasture..lol

thnx. hope 2 hear from some of you , cheers.

I think you can do well with that facility but you will never get rich with it. Perfect for a mom and pop or a semi-retired radio guy who has always wanted to own and run his own place.

I cant tell you if the price is fair. If someone ends up buying it at that price, I guess its a fair price. If not....

From looking at the maps it seems that the towns of Mexico, Jefferson City itself (very small, just a few blocks) and the wonderful town of Herrman are withing listening range. I would estimate that on the far east of the signal the St. Louis station start coming in, on the far west of it, the Columia stations will.

If I wanted to live in the countryside I'd go for it. But it really would be living in the country. That's probably not for me.

First of all, as a Jefferson City resident, I can tell you that it's definitely larger than a few blocks, though it's certainly a small town. KMCR 103.9 puts no signal into here and hasn't since at least what's now KJMO 104.1 signed on. It's a station that has no upgrade potential and does worse than its signal parameters indicate. There was actually talk of moving 103.9 into St. Louis in the mid-80's, but WJBM-FM 104.1 from Jerseyville beat them to the punch, which now keeps 103.9 from moving any further east. It also has to compete with St Louis and Columbia stations. I had lots of listeners in Montgomery County when I was on KPLA and later on KTXY. Even in Jefferson City, I can get most of the class C's from St. Louis. WIL-FM 92.3, KSHE 94.7, KIHT 96.3, KYKY 98.1, KEZK 102.5, KLOU 103.3, WARH 106.5 and even KSLZ 107.7 are listenable on my home stereo.

It is, however, in a pretty nice area. You can get to St Louis in less than an hour. Columbia is also less than an hour away. As you mentioned, Hermann, which is a nice town, is also not far away, though you have to drive down a narrow and windy road and cross a rickety bridge over the Missouri River to get there!

>thnx 2 you both for the input..
that is what i LOVE about this board/forum (radio-info)
I mean, come on, where else, can u open a conversation
about some thing like this..and get intelligent responses..
<>
thnx..soo, for what i gather, this is not the place (103.9)
kmcr--?-is it, to sign on a aggressive rock or intense chr station..

ahh, well, i will keep looking..for the $$$ to do so,
and the "perfect" station : )

As a resident of Bowling Green, about 30 Miles away from Montgomery City, I can tell you that to succeed, anyone who takes over that signal would probably flip it to some sort of Country music, or stay as is with AC. The area that KMCR covers is pretty rural, although there are definately a few good sized smaller towns like Warrenton & Mexico where they have a good signal and get some advertising from with current formats. They give their top of the hour ID as Montgomery City/Warrenton.

KMCR is locked in all directions - to the north with WQCY 103.9, to the west with WHHL Jerseyville on 104.1, and KJMO on 104.1 in Jeff City.
